A friend of mine (who for some strange reason looks to me for advice in SL) has been told by her landlord that he is moving the land he owns to a different sim, so she has to move too.
She has a home, furniture and garden, and wants to move the whole thing, as-is, from the old location to the new one in the easiest way possible.
I told her that the best thing to do would be for the landlord to return all her objects from the land - that will put one coalesced object into her inventory, with everything it, in its correct location.
She then goes to the new location and rezzes the coalesced object and everything should appear as it was in the new location.
Is my advice sound? I really don't want her to have her whole home messed up because of my bad advice.
Thanks in advance.

best thing is to fly or zoom above said land, open land options, click outside all her objects and drag the yellow box she will get over all the objects in one go, then select take.
she might have to switch on 'select own objects only'
also after this, double check the land for minor/small objects that maybe left behind.

Thanks in advance. That may or may not work. Coallesced objects only form groups if they are in a certain range of each other ( I think its 30 meters...not sure on that distance though) so if you rely on that method, you may get the house returned to you in several groups of objects...which would then need to be assembled back together. My suggestion would be to open up an edit box and drag a selection box over the entire house and objects. Then right click and select "take" Any objects not belonging/owned by her will stay behind and she can get those later...at least the majority of the objects will be moved. When she gets to the new place, she'll need to FIRST open up an edit box...then she can drag the coallesced object out of inventory...MAKE SURE THE EDIT BOX IS OPENED!! As long as the edit box is opened, the entire build can be moved and rotated into position. Once she is happy with the position, she can close the edit box and the entire build will be in individual pieces again. If she is unfamiliar with this process, she can practice on a bunch of prim boxes laid out on the ground at diff distances from each other...just select all and "take" ..then lay out on the ground and move them as one large joined object.

From: Dekka Raymaker also after this, double check the land for minor/small objects that maybe left behind. That's why I thought it would be easier for the owner to return everything, cos then she makes sure she has got everything in its original place....

also after this, double check the land for minor/small objects that maybe left behind. Dekka's recommendation will probably work better then having the landlord return everything, sometimes returned objects coalesce in more then one group. Don't fly too high above it all or some smaller objects may derezz. I've noticed this derezzing happening alot more lately when I'm only 30 meters or so away from an object. If your avatar is not wearing any "objects" she could just stand in the middle of everything and move her camera out where she can see it all to draw the box and select it all. Her proximity to all of the objects should help keep everything rezzed in place. When she is ready to rezz the objects at her new location its important to make sure and have the Build window open so all objects rezz "selected" that way you can move them around as one item for adjustments to the final placement. Sometime back I recall reading how LL had changed things to reduce lag, by preventing objects hidden behind or inside of another object (furniture inside a house) from rezzing if if was not in your field of view. This could be a problem when trying to select everything at once.

Use Caution

Picking up several objects into inventory to rerez elsewhere might be on the convenient side, but it's not without it's risks too. Suppose SL is having one of it's hiccups where there's a failure to rez, and the coalesced object(s) does not return to inventory. Instead of losing just one object (if the conglomeration of objects contains one or more no-copy items), then the risk is losing many objects as opposed to just one. It might be worth the time and aggrivation to just pick up and place everything back out, individually.

Wise advice Garrett. I recently lost several items to the "great beyond" never to be seen again - big items in fact and SL is not replacing them, I can tell you that. I'm in the process of letting Rioko use my land for an upcoming Forum party and need to clear out the area completely, including the house. Decided to just go about and "take" each item one by one instead as a precaution. It didn't take that long at all. Even the house will be gone eventually (saving it for last, I do need a roof over my head for a while). Plus, I may be moving after this anyway and may decide to redecorate and get rid of a lot of those items anyway. The thought of losing one coallesced item freaks me out. That's a lot of stuff to replace! I know it works for nearly everyone, but my recent luck? I didn't want to take the chance.

So one other lesson we learned - remember to "unlock" any locks items that you have placed before you select them all! Oops.
Thanks for the help though - definitely helped us.
