Something I had never seen before... I was chatting with a friend when, all of a sudden her whole av, including clothes, went almost completely jet-black, almost as if she were in silhouette, if you see what I mean. I say "almost completely" because you could just see some very dark red in some semi-transparent prim sleeves she was wearing. She and I could both see her unusual appearance, so it couldn't -- could it? -- be a graphics card issue.
She went into edit appearance a few times and suddenly regained her normal appearance.
She hadn't been doing anything to cause this -- no editing appearance, changing outfits, playing with settings. Neither of us has any idea what happened.. can anyone suggest a cause?

I've seen this a couple times, and it doesn't seem to be the same thing as the "lower/upper half is black" driver thing. Rebaking doesn't work. Merely going into edit appearance and back out again *can* fix it, but it seems to be lucky if it does. The trick I've done that works every time and helped a couple others with it is to go into appearance mode, and then change one of the torso or leg slider values by one number, save and exit. Somehow saving seems to force a different kind of update then just going into appearance mode does.

I have it happen to me too and rebaking will fix it, after all, by going into appearance, and adjusting anything, is causing a rebake as well.
I also have the issue when it seems to bake the hud (screen) image onto the avatar, which can result in funny things sometimes heh
