How do you retrieve an item that is lost into the walls or floor while trying to put it in place? Thanks in advance, Truffles.

if you have permissions to do so, open edit, select edit one prim only, click the offending item, be it wall or floor, move it out of the way, select lost item and move it. reselect the floor or wall, and undo and it will go back into place.

going into edit mode (ctrl-3) and dragging a box over where you think the item is should highlight it, just be carefull you don't select something else, you can also use highlight transparent (if your item has any transparancy on a texture it will glow red) there are some other settings that might help as well, there names and hot keys escape me tho, some one else will chime in with them tho hopefully.

or open edit, in tools in the menu bar at the top of the page, check 'select my items only', shift-drag over the area the object is, deselect all other items, pull item out of wall or floor

if you choose to move just the single prim to expose the item that is lost within it, you can return it with the undo command which is ctrl Z
If you mean you lost an item in the object as in, it is inside, not rezzed and hidden in it, then edit and check the contents tab and see if it is there
it is hard to know which exactly is the given situation as it describes both situations.

The item is rezzed and inside the wall.

Sometimes when I am afraid of damaging the build, I have been able to move my camera inside the object to see the prim buried within. I found I could do this better by rotating the camera sideways using the Alt key. It is quite a tedious method however.

From: Truffles Darwin The item is rezzed and inside the wall. then move the wall, if you can, and get the item, then edit the wall and use ctrl Z to put it back if you are not able to move the wall, use the above described sections method if all else fails send me an IM and I will help

You can use Rendering "hide selected" in the client menu to look inside walls etc...
You can turn off other rendering stuff there too, like surface patch if you need to look "underground".
