I don't own land, and I wanted to know if there is anywhere I can put a skybox without auto return deleting it? I'm looking for a place I can leave my skybox and comeback to later without the land owner's auto return having deleted it.

Even the "free" places will return stuff eventually, and they get junked up even worse than sandboxes. Either you can try to make friends with a landowner who can let you keep your stuff around for free (perhaps as part of a working arrangement), or you can break down and buy or rent land of your own.

Rent land and you can leave it there.

A skybox is just a house in the sky, sometimes a simple box, sometimes not. You can rent and not have to own land, but a parcel owner also owns the sky above their land, all the way up, so randomly rezzing a skybox is basically like being a squatter in RL. You're using up the owner's prims, which most of us don't really appreciate.
I have a little open beach down on the ground (with fishing!) and my house several hundred meters up for a bit of privacy. _____________________

i know this sounds noobish but . what is a skybox? It's just a plain old building placed above the ground, possibly with a deck or porch added on to make it a little less claustrophobic. and why have one if u have land? It's often less laggy up in the sky, fewer interruptions, and it can be a way to escape ugly neighboring structures. i thought a skybox was a cheaper way to have a place then owning land ![]() It can be cheaper in a rental situation, just because they work around the aforementioned ugly (and often cheaper) land, and more than one can be stuffed onto a parcel with somewhat decent separation. _____________________

Heck, I once had to ban a squatter who took over the workroom above my store! I had a room on the top floor where I would, on occasion, set up a photo studio. Someone snuck in and without so much as a 'by your leave?' set up a living room and bedroom set in that "unused" room. They even had set up house plants! I returned their junk and banned them on the spot, as soon as I discovered their stuff there. (Auto-return was off at the time because I had been allowing a friend to use the room for some building experiments of her own...)

LOL how ruuuude! Sometimes I'm just totally amazed at the idiocy of people who would do such a thing....but when I read something like this OP, I actually come to understand that some people genuinely just don't know any better.

Stick To The Question

It's really annoying when people post a response and all it contains is chat. That's what IM is for. It's also annoying when people piggyback on a question, get off topic with another question and then the original question is ignored or forgotten.
Thanks to all who answered my original post. |

If I were you I'd ask to speak to our managers, and suggest that we are fired from this support position or at least have our pay docked, as we are clearly not suited for it. _____________________

I would say rent a place, but you want free, so I guess ask around and see if someone is willing to let you squat
I have my store in the sky (so I guess that would be considered a skystore?) hehe and I have the arcade and a few small stores to rent on the ground, a big pond, and am installing the fishing system there soon I find it less laggy in the sky (at 900 meters there is not much else around me LOL) _____________________

Actually, I didn't see any real derailment of the OP's original topic, up to now Every post (up to now was related and offered insight into setting houses or any other item just anywhere one felt like doing so). Maybe the OP was not hearing what he wanted to hear and got pissed off?To the OP's question. You have to have rights in any place you wish to rezz an item....be it a house, furniture, pose ball or such. Just because someone who does have those rights has set the permissions to allow others to rezz objects does not give anyone free riegn to do so. You need one of three things to rezz an item anywhere in SL. 1. Own the land and have full rights to it. 2. Rent and have specific rights given by the owner. 3. Ask the owner for rights to rezz objects for your personal use (and observe any conditions that may be placed on you gaining such permission). If you don't have any of those you are "squatting". You are using someone else's assets without permission. And, just so you know, the foot print of the land that anyone owns is projected straight and straight down for as far as the grid goes in those directions...........in other words, infinitely. |

I have to say everyone seems to be against someone squating but when we talk about filling up abandoned land with trees and flowers so they don't get filled with screaming freebie vechicles we are all for it. My feeling is if you find abandoned land do what you want with it. If the owner comes back and returns all the stuff (that rarely happens) then you just did something to help out the nighbors to keep form having money primiads aall that land.

If it is abandoned land who is hurt. I'm not talking about someone witha house here. I'm talking about those places that just are piles of newbie vehicles and cubes. Weather it is good or not who does it hurt?

Weather it is good or not who does it hurt? It doesn't matter.....it's squatting. And just because the owner has not logged in for a while it does not give you or anyone rights to "beautify" the property. And just how do you know that land has been abandoned anyway? Ever think the persom just might want the land having crashed vehicles on it? Just because you don't like it you still have no right to put prims on it to take up the assets........assets you do not have rights to. |

I had someone put a 500 odd prim skybox complete with furniture and garden above a plot I had just cleared - had forgotten to put auto-return on whilst I was deciding what to do. I left it there for a while, watching the prim count climb as the days passed and they put more stuff out. When they had obviously finished decorating I gave them a couple of days just to get comfy, then promptly returned the whole lot in one big coalesced bundle!!

I'm looking for a place I can leave my skybox and comeback to later without the land owner's auto return having deleted it. If you look hard for it you will probably be able to find someplace like that. There are enough absentee landlords around, some of them are bound to not have auto return on or may have it set for long periods of time. Watch the header at the top of your screen as you fly around, look for land that doesn't have the "no-object" allowed symbol, that indicates that you will be able to build there. Then click on that header and check the objects tab in the About Land window that appears, it will show if auto return is on or not. If it is set to 0 then auto return is off. If it is set to a long period of time it may be enough for your occasional needs, you can rezz a skybox for an hour or two. _____________________
