I saw a very nice yard sale. There were several wall panels covered with signboards for purchasing each item. Each one had a photograph on it. I checked the perms, and all were no copy/transfer. So if this person paid L$10 to upload each photograph, and the items were priced very cheaply (like L$25), where is there really much money to be made on this sale? Especially if you factor in her time to set all that up.
Am I missing something? Please reply with your ideas about yard sales. I'd like to clean out my inventory and have one, but I'm not going to photography every item!

It's quite possible that she's not making any money!

Princess Ivory Maybe she's not making money, in reality when you have a yard sale you may get back only 1/4 to half what you spent originally anyway, it's just minimising a loss

Some items also come with a picture texture uploaded with the contents (i usually delete them) - maybe she is using those?

It is possible to combine several images on one texture and, through the use of fractional texture repeat values and appropriate offset values, display the individual pictures on different prims. I market a scoreboard that uses this technique, with all upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and punctuation contained in one texture.

She could just be trying to get some traffic or visibility. Does she have a store, a club, or rentals. Is the land for sale?

I recently attended a class that used that - we were given one texture in our class supplies that contained I'd estimate maybe 15 or so different textures. We made a beautiful Japanese tea house using just that one texture.

It brings up the question: does it consume more sim resources to use, say, 16 smaller textures, than 1 texture 16 times as big? (money savings aside)

it would depend on the sizes of the individual textures vs the single one, but there is probably a good inherent savings in the server not having to push as many overhead packets. One immediate advantage is that once the single texture has rezzed, all of the characters are clear. Ever checked a vote board and watched new letters stay fuzzy for a long time?
