What causes "Missing Texture" and, how to fix?

Anybody know the answer to that?

The reason I ask is, for the last few days, my wife has been wearing an outfit that we can see her wearing on her viewer, but on my viewer, 1/2 her clothes and eyes are the white "Missing Texture" texture.

Both of us has tried: relogging, baking textures, edit appearence then leaving edit appearance mode, clearing cache... none of it seems to make any difference. Her avi is still missing textures on my viewer.

Her textures always show up on her viewer but not on my viewer. And the weird part is, sometimes they're there, and sometimes they're not.

Is there any way to force her textures to show up on my viewer?

Does amount of inventory play into this? I've only got about 2600 items, and she has over 6500. ( Women always have 2-3 times more stuff than guys. ;) )

I'll drop a device on you in a bit that should help - it handles a great deal of SL's lil graphic glitches.

Try deleting your cache. If its visible with her viewer and not yours, then my hunch is that its borked in your cache.

Already tried that as previously explained. It didn't help. :(

My bad. :( ...

I'd just gotten home from work. (Shhh, I'm not supposed to be posting at work. ;) ) I hadn't seen your post yet. My wife walks in while I'm changing and says, "Somebody just gave you a De-Ruther. Do you want me to accept it for you?"

Not knowing who sent it I said, "No, no. Decline it. I don't need my account balance deleted today."

Then when she went to check on things while we were eating, she discovered your IM...

So, here I am now. Sorry about the confusion. I'll also send you an IM in-world. Could you send it again?

Btw, does the de-ruther run on my wife's viewer or my viewer?

Well here's what happened...

First of all, before the test, today she had most of her textures showing on my viewer... except for her eyes. Missing texture eyes are always so... creepy looking. But as usual everything showed up on her viewer.

Since her eyes were missing, we decided to try the de-ruther. So off to a sandbox she goes... Rezzed it. Touched... Off up into the wild blue. And back. At first appearance, everything looked OK on her viewer. But...

Now here eyes were greyed out on *her* viewer. :( They just wouldn't rez completely. Tried another set of eyes... Nada. Same thing. So then we tried a completely different outfit (with a third set of eyes). Everything rezzed OK... but the eyes. *big sobby cries*

Finally tried replacing just the eyes with a fourth set of eyes... Yey! The eyes are OK. Put the old outfit back on, copied the eyes to the new outfit, wore those (still OK, phew!) and removed the old eyes.

So, now that everything looks OK again on her viewer, she rejoins me at our favorite camping spot. AT LAST! She looks just the way she should on my viewer and her viewer. Only one little problem now...

Everybody *else* is Ruthed but her on her viewer. Me included. And let me tell you, Ruth looks pretty effing weird with a beard and a leather jacket. :D But we figure her viewer's been up for at least 5 hours now and it's probably just exhausted. All the Ruths are in that arms-straight-out position. It looks reeeaaally strange.

But the botton line is my honey looks good on my viewer. Your de-ruther worked from my view(ers) point.

Thank you for helping! It's very much appreciated. :)

Are you both using the standard install? If so, maybe having one or both of you switch ports it may help. A full uninstall (delete everything SL on your PC) and reinstall may help too.

Put some different eyes on. Change gender. Close Edit Appearance. Change gender back. Close again. Put original eyes back on.

If they still are not working, leave it - clear your cache again, then you should find that the eyes are working. If all else fails ... new eyes.

BUT I am assuming that you have gone into Client>>>Character>>>Rebake Textures?

And posting for the benefit of others, if you can't see the Client and Server menu this is toggled on and off by pressing Ctrl Alt D.

Hope that helps :) Changing gender back and forth also gets rid of creepy stalker types early on :)

Are you both connected via a router? Is one on a wireless connection and the other on wired?

If so, reboot the router (unplug it from the mains for 15-20 seconds), then uninstall SL completely off both systems, then install a fresh copy. Try logging in and see what happens.

Anybody know the answer to that?

Two blog posts from last year on that..

http://blog.secondlife.com/2006/09/18/getting-technical-baked-avatar-textures/
http://blog.secondlife.com/2006/10/11/gray-and-missing-image-avatars/

Basically, your look in SL (excluding prim attachments - just talking 'real' clothes and such here) is made up of a bunch of different layers. There's the skin then on top of that, unless your name is Colette, some underwear then maybe some clothes on top of that. Some or all or the clothes may have transparent parts which let others see the bits underneath. All these things are really just textures that are wrapped onto your shape.

Instead of drawing all these textures separately on every frame, SL 'bakes' all the textures that go into your appearance into a single texture then uses that one texture to draw your image - this ends up being a _huge_ savings because everybody doesn't have to sort through all the layers of what is and isn't visible for everybody else.

For various reasons, the process of baking your look happens on _your_ PC. When you change your appearance/clothes, _your_ PC takes all the pieces of it, bakes it all up into one image then uploads that image to the sim you're on. The sim then takes that image and sends it to everybody else who can see you.

When you see gray, on an avatar or on anything else, it just means that you haven't gotten the texture yet from SL. Gray is not an indication that something is wrong - it just means that you've got more texure downloading to do. (tip: hovering your mouse over a gray image bumps up the priority for that texture.. if you want something in particular to rez before other gray things, rest your mouse on the one you want)

Seeing avatars as Missing Image is something different.. Since SL has to bake all the skin/clothing pieces into one texture, upload that to the sim then have others download it from the sim, there's a lot more that can go wrong. When something does go wrong and some _other_ avatar doesn't get the image you baked, they get Missing Image instead.

If you kinda step back and think about this, you can see why people with Missing Image (creepy clown eyes!!) always see themselves as looking fine: the baking happened on their PC and they've already got the image - they don't have to download it from the sim.

So.. That's the answer to your question. People go Missing Image because something in the baking process or upload/download process goes wrong.

One solution is in the Client menu (which ctrl-alt-d enables, if you don't have a Client menu) under Character. There's an option for Rebake Textures. This forces SL on your PC to rebake all your pieces and send them to the sim again.

If this doesn't help and it's limited to one person _and_ others also see that person with Missing Image, the problem may be on their end. Could be that their connection to the sim isn't very good or has firewall issues that are preventing SL from uploading the baked image. Could be that the sim itself is having problems (stats bar: pending uploads & downloads is a good place to look). Or it might be one of 193 other things that I don't understand..

edit: and, before anybody corrects me, I know baking doesn't _really_ result in one, single image. It actually breaks down into 4-5 images for things like upper/lower body and eyes and such. Saying "one" image just helps to get the concept down.. :)

Nope. We're both using the Nicholaz 18xj viewer.

Up until 3 days ago, we hadn't had the problem for a couple of months, so I don't think the ports have anything to do with the problem.

Read the OP and the post 2 prior to yours. Did all of that.

Does being Ruth'ed qualify as changing genders? :D

Only one router - wired. It gets rebooted every morning before we start our PCs.

So, that doesn't help either. But thanks anyway; it was worth mentioning.

Meade,
I think you hit the nail on the head. SL isn't always getting the textures uploaded to the destination viewer for some reason. Nothing we tried helped at all.

And here's the kicker... Nothing has changed on our PCs or viewers since last night, but today - all of both of our textures are showing up on both of our viewers. (insert some growly/gravley sound of frustration here)

So... I'm writting this one off as just some more weird SL borkiness. ( :p - that's for LL causing me and the missus all that grief for the last three days. )
