Alternative to AjaxLife?

Hey, Y'all!

Does anyone know if AjaxLife is the only way to log into SL outside of the actual SL viewer? I can't use the SL viewer at my workplace (it bombs out logging in at "Waiting for Region Handshake";) so I've been using AjaxLife, which isn't ideal but allows me to at least browse through and make plans to organize my inventory. But AjaxLife's connection to LL always seems to hang by a thread so while I'm logged in it's like it's up then down then up then down. So now I'm wondering of there's another way in. Is there such a thing?

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

sounds like a firewall issue, to me. nicholaz won't help, if that's the case.

Nor will sleek, maybe it works when you set up an SL proxy at home

I tried nicholaz a while back and still no go (so, yeah, I also believe it's a firewall issue.)

But Sleek did connect for me, but a couple of its components didn't work (I could not see people who I knew were online, I could see the folders of my inventory but not the contents...)

I think Abigail has mentioned the best solution for me and that would be to remote to my home PC. That would also have the advantage of not really leaving much of a trace of what I'm doing with my time at work during the day (hey--we're between projects here right now! :)

Be aware that SLeek isn't complete, and some features are missing or don't work properly. Not to complain, of course - it's free and it works at a basic level. There's also METABolt, which seems to be at about the same level of development, except a little further on.

(I'm still new to METABolt, but I've been using SLeek for a while to run multiple alts - my PC isn't up to running two copies of the same client without a *lot* of lag.)

I played with SLeek once - the problem was when I checked myself by logging an alt into a laptop next to the main comp, I was seen by the alt to be fixed in a clumsy half-sitting position.

Indeed - it's hard to look realistic with a text-only viewer - in fact, they're hit-and-miss most of the time anyway. But they're extremely handy when they do do what you need - for example, I have an alt with the same shape and dimensions as my SO, so I can use the alt to position poseballs, etc without her needing to be there.

I wish AjaxLife were more suitable to small screens, though - being a browser-based tool, I can run it on my Nokia N-180 pocket tablet UNIX-based PC. The problem is, the layout isn't suited for such a small screen, and it's quite a task just to log in.

I get a mess of errors with SLeek. Not fun.

AjaxLife ( http://ajaxlife.net/ )
-- Web Based, Text-only interface for Second Life.

MovableLife ( http://movablelife.net/login.aspx )
-- Web Based, Text-only interface for Second Life.
(Similar to AjaxLife.. but different features)

Sleek ( http://delta.slinked.net/second-life/sleek/ )
-- Small standalone text-only SL client program.

MetaBolt ( http://www.metabolt.net/ )
-- Small standalone text-only SL client program.
(similar to Sleek, more features, and banner ads)

If SL is BLOCKED on your firewall, odds are good that Sleek and MetaBolt are goign to be useless. Ajax and Movable are pretty neat.

NONE of these are perfect.. but they have their uses.

I really am looking forward to some of the open-sourcers getting their hands on that 'SL on a cell phone" client. I'd really like to see a low-graphics-quality version of SL, maybe something that used a static sky, static lighting, no shading, and avatar imposters exclusively. I'd bet that QUITE A FEW SL users would use it.
