I was unfortunately for me not here during the very start of SL or the start of the forums.

What was the original structure of these forums?

There used to be an off-topic forum called The Sandbox. That was not the original name of the off-topic forum. I remember being unhappy about the change of name. I don't remember the old name. Was it "Off Topic"?

The used to be a "Rants" forum. What was the exact name of the "Rants" forum? Does anyone have any old posts from there saved they could post to a third party site? (The entire forum was removed from view here probably for a reason so it's probably best to not repost any of the content here.)

Who were the most well known posters that vanished from the forums before 2004?

I think Off Topic was the original name of the Sandbox.
I don't remember a Rants forum (doesn't mean there wasn't one).

Near as I can tell, the only part that still exists is the segment found in Archive, which goes back to 2002. It seems to be what later became General Topics and ends in Oct 2005, about the time General Topics became instated.

Here is a link to the old forums now listed as the archive:

General Chat was a 'rant' folder.

That doesn't show the structure of the forums when they were first created, nor is it a complete record of all the posts made. As an obvious example, there wasn't a "Preview for SL 1.9" forum when SL started. The wasn't a "SL In-world Political Science" forum, and that forum used "PolySci" in its title when it was created. There wasn't a "Land and Economy" forum when the forums started, or a "Bulletin Board", or a "Linden Answers" forum, or a Zoning/Covenants/Group Empowerement forum, or Second Life Land Management forum

For those that might enjoy reading about the old days, using the archives, such as they are, can fill some idle time, say, perhaps the next time the grid goes down.

did you check the wayback machine?

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://forums.secondlife.com

Looks like a lot of index listings are "behind a login" however it also seems that SOME of those archive links are readable (most of 2004 seems to be), perhaps you can find your information there?
