I can think of two ways -

Canceling their account

Being banned.

Could it be that little box on the main page of their profile that says "Show in Search" is unchecked?

Or as Colette said.

New search all allows you to opt out of being found, because your profile becomes a web page. But you can be found using the Search People tab, unless your account has been deleted/suspended.

Well, there must be some subtleties here. Searching from out-of-world via website:

1. If I check the box, this is what you see for me, searching for All or People:
Resident: Nika Talaj. This resident has chosen to hide their profile from search.
Then there's a link to my inworld profile.

2. I have an alt with no payment info on file, and with the box checked I don't see any message like the Resident: one above, but just a link to their inworld profile.

3. I have a friend who I KNOW logs in every night. No payment info on file. New search does not find him at all. Old search (inworld) of course does.

The new search, it can take a few days for residents to appear in it.

The old search, let's call it the People Directory. If someone doesn't appear in that, they either created their account just a few minutes ago, or the account is on hold or terminated.

The guy who doesn't show up at all has been a resident since at least February-ish, when I met him.

Could it be related to this bug?

Possibly, tho the behavior is more like that documented by a couple of commenters on the blog - happens whether or not the name was ever restored to search. I added a comment to
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3351

which seems closest.

Really? Did they change something then because it used to return you and say "This user has chosen to hide their profile" or something like that. There would be no profile details but the name would still return a result.

The name will be found, but the profile itself will not be shown. I believe this was addressed in the comments of one of Jeska's blog posts.

Ah no this is different. I search for some people in search all and nothing returns. I use people search and there they are.

Opting out of search all should really mean opting out, for a minute there I thought they'd cracked that one.

It does not make sense for a name to not be found if they are in the people directory (great term). If what matters is the contents not being displayed, then I believe that that is properly addressed, and the right balance has been struck.

As far as I know, people who opt out of search all do not have their profiles displayed, although you can find the name, because it is a web page and is searchable via the web without a SL account.

Whereas if you are ingame, you should always be found in the people directory, unless your account is banned or deleted.

This makes sense and I don't see what's wrong with it.

option number 3. there was a billind discrepency (sp? oy) with LL and LL shut em down. I saw a thread not that long ago I thought on someone who had an issue with a bill going through their cc, or was it paypal, and their account was shut down, gone from search, and was only fixed after she got billing working again and paid up.

I think newly created accounts will also not show up in search for a short while.

If you're opting out of search all, you're opting out, that's what's wrong with it. Facebook allow users to opt out of spiders searching their profile, SL should do the same otherwise the opt out is pretty damn meaningless.
