Logging off without quiting...

OK...so this is a huge pet-peeve of mine. Clearly it makes sense to be able to log-off and return to the log-in screen, instead of having to quit Second Life altogether.

Sometimes we are logged-off for different reasons--why must we quit the entire application before logging back in? Silly. Heck more than silly, completely counter-productive.

There must be a specific reason why you can't...it's just too foolish not to have.

Any thoughts? Any answers?

Thanks everyone.

There have already been two threads on this in just the past week .

I still don't get why it's such an immense pain to close the client and start it again, it takes literally less than a second.

nuh uh.. like.. 5... cause it has to 'save final data' or w/e then do the log out... and then you have to open it up again =P

It has to do "Save Final Data" anyway as part of logging off :p.

I meant moving the mouse down to the bottom of the screen and clicking SL in the quick-launch bar takes less than a second and start-up is near instant and I clear cache every single run.

A second? Wow. Start-up seems to take me about 5 minutes.

It's not the end of the world, Kitty, but it is annoying. I can't think of a single application other than SL that requires I log off completely. I'm not losing sleep over it but I do curse it every time.

Everquest 2 requires a full exit, I think because it has to load what content you're allowed. But theres one =P

try running it with the debug window on.
SL actually closes the client window before finishing saving data and deleting temp files n stuff.

So yeah... it has to be that way because that's the way they designed it.

And as we all know, they have designed the client very poorly when it comes to the basics. Why does the K.I.S.S never cross their minds? I mean, look how long it took them to make the two graphics tabs into one in the preferences!

All of my other MMO style programs allow me to log out to the main screen. SL just simply shuts down.. which means the time wasted in the initial load up. I might be tired of my main and want to simply swap to my alt. There are no others using my computer, even my hubby's account it logged in by me (with his permission, because usually I'm making sure he got something for him), so why not give me the option of saying, "Hey, I don't want to quit completely out. How about you take me to the login screen instead?"

Takes me about five to ten minutes for SL to shut down, then another five to seven for it to start back up. It's a pain.

If it's taking you that long to log off, you're probably running into the memory leak bug(s) and you'd drag all that bloat over to the next log-on session if you could just log off and back on.

I can't imagine what makes start-up take that long though . My puter is old and it just pops right up after clicking.

This is a good idea.

Especially since you have to relog for numerous performance issues anyway.. such as slow rezzing, Prim attachment issues, being ruthed, etc.

-------------

And of course the alt people ..

A lot of people have one alt for business and one alt for personal use for sanity reasons.

While others have a whole gambit of alts.

Alts are good for the economy anyhow.

Wha? Speak for yourself. :) It takes me sometimes minutes depending on my harddrive, background programs, ect...

I'm running a P3...

It takes you 'literally' less than a second? What are you Data using the Enterprise's mainframe? Sheesh.

This a pet peeve for a lot of people, although it wouldn't be one of mine if I could log back in 5 seconds:). Five seconds!

But hey it's not the end of the world.

Exactly! What Raudf said.

But you know, compared to my usual: crash/log out/clear cache/relog/get stuck/boots up my bum...etc stuff, this is a little thing for me. :p
