I change it based on the location/event I'm at.
When generally just roaming around or at home I have always. (The av that I didn't pay attention too 10 minutes ago I might what to talk to later)
At major events when there are alot of avatars I change it to never.(It's just screen garbage)
In small group discussions I have it set to temp.

I need them while preforming and to see who is in my clubs.
when I am out and about playing I turn them off cause they get in the way, and I assume just more for the client to DL

temporary: because i hate screen clutter.
and not never, because when first seeing someone/place, it is handy to see their name. it isn't always possible (let alone easy) to get someone's name by hovering your cursor over them. ie: if they are dancing. if they are moving. if YOU are moving. or any combination of the above.
what i do wish is they would have a hot-key so you could toggle names on while you held it down. because sometimes i really need to find someone, and hovering over everyone in the joint just isn't fast enough. (neither is going through preferences and setting one or the other. :X )
who's up for a jira suggestion on that one?
(gawd, IS there one? when is jira going to be user-friendly?)

My name is disabled on my screen and all others show temporarily, in small size. If i need to see one again, I do like Nina said.

Interesting most commenters are 'temp', me as well... yet the poll results show more have them always on.
I, like Brenda, have my named turned off and 'show temp' small font on others. I do the cursor-over if I need a name again.
At home though I'm thinking of switching to always on. I've had a recent issue of home invaders, 3 in two weeks, and for some reason one guy was able to see me first and poof away before I caught his name.

Never. It causes more vid lag which I don't need. LL supplies me with more than I can use. I'm thinking to try to sell it. Anyone want to buy a cup of lag? Only 1L$

Perhaps this is not generally known: You can right-click the title text same as on an avie itself to see the familiar pie.
IMNSHO, a keyboard shortcut to toggle display names/tags in not needed when CTRL+P brings up the preferences screen in an instant.
