I just got back from the closest thing to Second Life that I've ever seen in the real world. I went to Make Magazine's Maker Faire that is held every year in the San Francisco Bay area. They've also had some in a few other places. It's a full weekend of events and displays of all kinds of wonderfully creative things that people are making. Art, robots, clothes, cars, electronics, Tesla coils, a gigantic version of the Mousetrap boardgame that could kill someone, etc. The people in the steampunk section looked like they arrived straight from Caledon. It was all really amazing. I'm hoping that next year there will be a Second Life display to show off some of the creativity that we have here.
I'm pretty sure that I saw Phil Linden there, but I was in a rush to get to a presentation and couldn't find him later on. (for the record, he was not dressed as his avatar, but he would have fit in even if he was) (well, maybe not the codpiece)

The closest RL event I've seen to SL is the Burning Man Festival. Sadly I've never actually been to it. But I have been to the SL version - Burning Life - 2 years running.

My first reaction when I started SL was "Hey, this is kind of like Burning Man! Without the dust. Or the heat. Or the crush of humanity...." I haven't been to Burning Man in 7-8 years, but maybe I'll remember to check out Burning Life this year...

I did take a bunch of pictures, but it will take me a while to sort through them and get them posted somewhere. Here's a link to a bunch that some other people took. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/makerfaire09/And a YouTube video by someone else: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pk9GFwZxrDc&feature=channel

My first reaction was "this is like a science fiction convention, except all the costumes are real".
