please forgive me and move my post if this is the wrong place to post, i did try to search to the best of my knowledge.

this is what happened to me today.

i logged in with my main account (bee baroque) from my desktop machine, which i always do. only use the laptop when needed. login went fine. i wanted to test things with my land security orb so i logged out my main account and logged my alt in. (didn't think of using the laptop, i see now i should have).

my alt only stayed logged in for a couple of minutes as i realised i had to log back in with my main account to change some settings in my security orb. so, logged my alt out and my main in again. still no trouble. did what i had to do, logged my main account out and my alt back in to test. all went as i wanted, so logged the alt out again after a couple of minutes.

then, when i wanted to log my main account back in i got the message saying login failed due to username and/or password being incorrect. i checked, double checked and triple checked caps lock was not on. besides i use copy+paste when entering the password anyhow. still no luck.

now. tried logging my main account in with my laptop works fine. and my alt still logs in fine on both the desktop and the laptop.

i have restarted my modem and rebooted my desktop. still having the same issue now several hours later. :(

i'd welcome any help, please.

You could try uninstalling SL and reinstalling it.

Do you have anything besides alphanumeric characters in your password?

Are you using a wireless keyboard? What kind of keyboard is it? What nationality is the keyboard?

Is it a Mac, Windows, or Linux system?

You could try a system restore if your operating system allows, to the nearest date when things were working.

Please realize I have no idea what the problem is and am just suggesting things somewhat at random.

I'm looking at jira.secondlife.com, using the search term password at the moment. You might try that.

You can try filing a ticket, or if you have access to the Live help, try that.

You could try modifiying the shortcut that starts SL by adding

-- login FirstName LastName password

to the end of the target field, with a space in front of --login

replacing Firstname, Lastname, and password with your info.

not quite sure what "alpanumeric characters" are, english is not my first language, sorry...

but what i find strange is that the password worked one minute - then next it does not (on the desktop machine), but on the laptop it works with no trouble. and i copy+paste the password...

i am using a wireless keyboard, yes. a logitech something. not sure about the nationality of the keyboard, but it does have the norwegian characters (æ, ø and å), as i am norwegian. never had this problem before.

edited to add:
yes, i realize that. i do appreciate you taking the time to try to help me, thank you so much :) i will try what i can from the things you have suggested.

thank you :)

Alphanumeric means letters and numbers.

Have you tried entering the password by typing instead of cutting and pasting?

Possibly you hit a key combination that toggles the keyboard from one mode to another.

If you have any other keyboards around to try that would be worth trying.

If your wireless keyboard uses batteries you could try putting in new ones, or recharging them, or just taking them out and putting them back in.

You could try logging in to the beta grid and see if that works. That would just be for information.

SuezanneC - you have been most patient with someone who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a computer... :D

i have succesfully logged in my main account from my desktop machine now and i'm extremely embarassed to say what caused the failed logins, but then thought a good laugh would be nice on a sunday, so here we go.

somehow an extra character had been added to the end of my password... *blush* i didn't notice that until just now, comparing the password stored on my laptop to the one stored on my desktop. the extra character has been deleted, quarantined and banned from ever entering my system again!

my cheeks are burning from embarassment 8)

so sorry for taking up your time, but your patience and goodwill was appreciated like a nice and warm bed on a freezing cold winter morning. thank you so much! :) :) :)

You are most welcome.

I've had many a problem caused by cutting and pasting. At work I, more than any of the other designers, cut and paste from the order software, because I'm the most fluent with using the computer. So... when there's a typo in the work order, I may be the most likely one to propagate the error toward the finished product.

I also use a program called Synergy to let me share one mouse and keyboard between two computers. It's also supposed to let you share the clipboard between the two computers, so when you copy some text from the browser on one machine you can slide the cursor over to the other computer's monitor and paste it in. It's not the most robust program in the world, though, and it drops the clipboard connection on a regular basis.

So, you think you will paste in one thing, and instead of just failing and pasting nothing, it pastes in the last thing in the copy buffer from before the program failed.

So, if I had my social security number copied into the clipboard for doing my taxes or something like that, then while multi-tasking, highlighted the url of a SL wiki link and copied that, slid the cursor over to the other computer and press control V, instead of pasting the wiki link into a post in the forums here, for example, it would paste in my social security number. This means I need to be very careful when using this program. Not to be used when tired or otherwise incapacitated.

That reminds me, there's an alternate keyboard mouse sharing program that I meant to try out and I have now procrastinated so long that I've forgotten what its called.
