Hi,
I reloaded SL today after it was off my computer for 1/2 year. I can't get the Fly feature to work in some places. The Fly button at the bottom left is "grayed out." There is NO feature in the right hand corner that has arrows, as seen on a fly tutorial. And, in places that let me fly, I can't gently land with the arrow down button. What am I doing wrong?

Some areas can be designated no fly zones.

That is extremely likely what is going on. :)

Welcome to the forums.

Some land owners disable the ability to fly on their land, which could be your problem if it only happens in certain sims.. You might be able to see this in the 'About Land' thing. Not sure, since I am not inword at the moment.

The landing problem I don't have an answer for though...

I experienced the "can't fly up or down" bug with the Release Client a couple of versions ago - however, it was also at a time that the grid was having new software rolled out.

What viewer are you using?

Not Able To Fly

There are some optional devices you can get that allow you to hover or fly in a no-fly zone, if you think flying wouldn't be objectionable to others in the region.

my problem with flying.

To Joseph Able,
Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm not sure what you mean by: "what viewer are you using?"

For the location that it is grayed out, then yes the land owner must have disaabled flying. But what happened to the gray box that is suppose to be in the upper right hand arrows that manipulates flying? ( I saw it in a tutorial).

View > Movement Controls

Using Page Up and Page Down, plus the arrow keys is easier though.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Marti - you are likely using the standard viewer, version 1.19.1.4 (if you just downloaded it).
So, what you are experiencing is likely what everyone else is describing - not the bug I encountered a few versions ago.

Ann has the keys listed for you (additionally, the "Home" key is turn fly on or off on fly enabled plots).

Sorry for any confusion.

........ You can get around that. Just press ctrl-alt-shift-D to bring up the advanced menu. Then press crtl-alt-V...

Many places do not allow flying and have it turned off, thus your greyed out fly button.

Roleplay areas where flying does not fit with the roleplay is one of the main reasons for it. If you use the getarounds to fly in these areas you are likely to find yourself ejected and banned so make sure there isn't a good reason for no flying before you insist on it. If the landowner doesn't wish you to fly, then as it's their land you are on, be respectful.

You might also be sitting on something. Be sure to click the "stand up" (or whatever it's called) button first

As for the landing part if your fly button is grayed out … as you are spiraling down to land at a high rate of speed and about to do that belly flop on the hard ground below,,, you can press down on your space bar to slow you down a tad ..

I routinely TP home people I catch flying in my sim. It's clearly marked no fly. So i wouldn't advise flying in no fly zones. They are usually set for a reason. (such as, there's nothing at 700 meters that is any of your business. :P )
