Is there a way to know who is viewing your profile and when?

Here or in world?

The answer is no. As far as I know, anyway.

Made me wish we could right-click in RL and view profiles of people we meet.
Would save sooo many awkward moments.

Then again, I'm not sure if I really want to know "everything" that one can learn in a profile...

I don't think there's anyway to do it. You can turn on 'show look at' which will possibly give you a hint of who is looking at you but that doesn't really mean they are reading your profile. Try putting something juicy in your profile that they simply must ask you about.

I presume you are wondering if there is a way for people to tell similar to the way they can tell you are looking at an object. The answer to that is no. They cannot tell. For the most part you're safe to go ahead and snoop away. :D

I'm really curious what prompts so many people to ask this.

Only way of knowing if they read your profile is if they make comment about it.

Maybe people want to know if it's worth putting stuff on it.

It is. I don't often read all that's on them (esp as they are often aimed at the person themselves if it is a personal pick for example) but you get a much better reception if you make an effort. Same as it being worth the effort to tailor your av.

OK, class, time for a quick Profile lesson...

First, GQ Start offers a newcomer's class about Profiles, and I recommend it.

But, for those who missed the class...

Your Profile is where you put all the things you WANT people to know about you. And, for experienced avatars, it's the first thing they check when they meet you.

Your Second Life tab (the first page) is where you should put the most prominent details: What you're here to accomplish, what sorts of people you like to meet, what you enjoy doing most. Or you can put in a bit of poetry or some obscure quote that you feel describes your approach to life. You can also put an attractive picture of yourself here. This page is the one you use to give somebody else an item...just drag it into the Give Inventory box or drop it in the photo area.

Interests: Check boxes to summarize what SL activities you most like.

Your Picks tab is where you can list your favorite places. A lot of people also use it to showcase their partners or special friends. If you have a business, it should be here.

Your First Life tab is where you can tell people about your real self...or where you can tell them not to be nosey. Room for another pic here...it could be you in RL, or it could be another shot of your avatar, or just someone you WISHED you looked like.

Notes: This page is for other people. You can write a note to yourself about this avatar..."Griefed me on Orientation Island", "Hot babe I met at Bogart's", or whatever.

Remember: Your Profile is your calling card. Expect it to be looked at, and make it the best picture of yourself that you can. Re-read it from time to time, and update it with new information as you yourself evolve in your Second Life.

I totally agree with your coment, although I'm not so experienced in SL (just born on December 26th) it's anoying to see an AV older than me with nothing on his/her profile, not even a picture on the first page.... I know that might be secondary but it's nice to see that people care about the public profile. I tend not to talk much with older people with blank profiles hehehehehe

Also.....you can use the Notes page in another avie's profile to keep YOUR notes about THEM. Helps jog your memory....."Oh sure, yeah, I remember you, you caged me in Heaven's Above.... December 13, 2005 !!" *grin*
