A Linden staff member used "AO" in a blog post, meaning "Adult Oriented" instead of what it generally has meant for years in SL parlance, Animation Override.
I was disappointed when I went to see what the new animation feature was going to be but found that the beta grid is said to have some of the new Adult content control system in it already.
It would be nice if the LL staff could leave AO to mean Animation Override and find some other term term for the strong content control system.

Yes! I was just reading a forum post that was peppered with AO meaning "Adult Oriented" and had to force my brain to not think "Animation Overrider" everytime it was used. I guess next time i explain to a noob that they need to get an AO to be like me, I will have to actually say "animation overrider" or they may think I am trying to recruit them into the pervish underworld of SL and report me.

Indeed. When I see stuff like this, I really have to wonder if some of these Lindens have ever actually been in-world!

From: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/technology/release/blog/2009/03/12/help-us-beta-test-server-version-126 .... NOTE: although, as you've read here on the blogs, the new AO functionality is included as part of 1.26, this blog post is not the right place to discuss policy. ....
I read that and immediately thought "They're testing an embedded AO and don't want to get involved in a discussion about the effect on AO sales. Wowsa. No more duck-walk" Then I realised ... that's client-side.. and...they're talking about the xUCK-walk. What is the xUCK-walk? It's the great trek to be led by Moses Linden to the Promiscuous Land. He will lead a long trail of Adults past pillars of fire (ban-lined parcels) with particle-spammers showering manna on them. When they come to the seas, they will part, revealing a seabed littered with random cubes and abandoned vehicles.

The most revealing thing about that blog post, as already pointed out by others, is that if the new adult content code has already been written and is in beta testing, then the adult policy was decided a long time ago and it's kind of pointless to be asking our opinion of it now.

-Atashi Yes and no. The adult code already existed. All they had to do was include Payment Info as a factor to allow access. Well, that and actually make the thing work. The code that has been live for some time now and enables Age Verified access is apparently very broken.

The code has been there all along though, it just likely just needed an extra case for "adult only". One of the problems that sometimes came up with cancelled accounts was that they would be reinstated with a "PG only" flag. The net effect was that they couldn't access mature sims in any way; if they stood on a PG sim bordering a mature sim all they would see was void water instead of a sim.

-Atashi I agree. If the Ursula land mass is the new adult land... It has been on the grid for months with busy Moles slaving away on it. Our input is rather pointless. I was also fooled by the new AO and very disappinted when I discovered what it really stood for. Personally I would much rather have an animation overrider built into the client than some moral compass.

Instead of AO areas I think it should be referred to as the TAO of Linden areas as in tits n ass oriented.

How terribly sad that the Lindens are so disconnected with their own world that they don't know what "AO" means to the rest of us.

-Atashi I never took the call for feedback as implying that the broader policy was up for debate, only the finer points of things like how the move of adult businesses should take place, and what the final definitions of adult content will look like. Something like - We are creating a new land rating. We are creating a new mainland landmass that will be made up of this new rating. Residents will have to be verified in some way to access land with the new rating. Search and classifieds will be sorted based on the new rating. This applies to estates too. That stuff is settled. OK guys, did we miss anything? Throw your questions and potential gray area scenarios at us so we can make the policy more clear. Of course, that discussion of the finer points may be pointless too. We'll see.
