Is it possible to change the "properties" of the desktop icon so that a specific SL account is started? Several people use the same computer here to access SL so it would be good if the start routine "remembered" the correct AV name and PW.
I know you can do this with a WORD document or other file where clicking the icon opens a specific document in the proper application.
It isn't critical, but it would be a good thing.
Thanks

I don't know the specific answer. But I think it's possible and will suggest a place to find out: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Client_parametersI know very little about how the parameters work, but there seems to be one for specifying login information.

I'm pretty sure you can rename any icon you want that is on your desktop by right clicking it. Wouldn't that solve your issue?

Well I don't think so. It usually keeps the account name highlighted, I hope you are not saving your passwords here with this group-ness going on. I don't think I would be so trusting. The icon really is just a shortcut to c/program files/ sl/ users/ blah blah blah.exe
i think the client itself would have to have the function to save multiple names in a drop down window. I have an alt I test with and think this would be helpful in these situations as well. There were some concerns last year with password hashing and decoding. Maybe you really don't want that info stored on your client to be honest. Quite a few accounts got stolen and stripped by some 3rd party something.

I was just looking at the link that Amity has and it does have a parameter for login name and password. I'm not sure if you want to use it though as anyone there could login as anyone else. I'm not sure you'd want that.

Thanks for the info so far...the password issue isn't really a problem...If the other users wanted to take something from me, it wouldn't be in SL! What's mine is...we'll you know.

While it's definitely possible to do that using the "--login <firstname> <lastname> <password>" parameters I would strongly advise against that practice. If more than one person is using the same computer, you are basically allowing others to use your account. This is very dangerous.

You can also use just "--login <firstname> <lastname>" , without the quotes, added to the shortcut properties. This will remember the avatar name, but will still require the password, which it will prompt you for.

I guess I misunderstood the question. I thought the OP wanted to know how to differientate the Second Life shortcut to a different user account on the same computer. But, since I don't have user accounts on my computer (I'm the only one) I was thinking renaming the different shortcuts for each user would solve the problem.......guess SL is only installed one time on the computer in question and not installed for each user account. Or did I understand correctly?

I used to have a bunch of shortcuts that used the login parameter to start various accounts.
So let's say you have five accounts, there's five shortcuts.
Then you decide it would be nice to have the same for the release candidate and the beta grid client. Now you have fifteen shortcuts. Plus you'll still end up wanting some shortcuts that don't have a login parmeter. Aighh!!! Too many shortcuts.
You can use an old fashioned batch file to fire up a bunch of accounts with one click if you are in the mood.
