Is this due to DSL or not?

Well.....I moved IRL. 7 hour road trip....uneventful, even the cat did fine. :p

I've got my desktop hooked up at my sisters and her DSL connection seems to be working just fine....it's quite fast (I was on high speed cable before with very few problems ever in SL)

So....I just did the big test and logged in.....everything looked great....textures all rezzed real fast and I looked at my stats bar and everything was fine...But....twice now I crashed once I teleported to a new location. I got there fine....but as I moved, I crashed and I get a messege on my desktop "transfwrring to server 1......" something or another. So....I really don't know if this is an issue with the DSL connection....or something going on in world with transferring from region to region. I've never ever had that kind of messege before, and I didn't crash very often with Cable....so....any thoughts? Have there been some issues over the last 24 hours? (lol, silly me, of course there have, it's SL)

Anyone? I'm noticing packet loss which I never had problems with using cable. *shrug*

I changed some settings and I was able to teleport and finally move around...but my packet loss was bouncing all over the place. :p

Milla, I am on DSL and it works just fine. You should maybe check if there is a firewall in place that interferes, maybe a hardware firewall, we have that a lot worked into the router itself. Sounds to me like something is intercepting the data transfer when you are switching between regions.

You can't blame DSL per se, but it could be that the new service is slow. That shouldn't cause crashing -- just slow rezzing -- but as we all know, SL does have a bug or two.

Try different times of the day, different days of the week, and see if that makes a difference. Sometimes it's related to the load on the network due to other subscribers, so if you use off-hours you get better results.

I have one question for you "M", What version of the client are you using? Current publish or current RC version?

I run better on my DSL line than on the cable I had. (I will never use comcast AGAIN! EVER!!! 10gb that was like dial up any time between 3 pm and 12 am )

sounds like a router issue possibly or firewall with the packet loss.
your on the earthnet line and not wireless right? wireless can and will loose packets a lot.

You really can't compare one persons cable/DSL to anybody elses, unless they live next door to you in RL.

SL counts out-of-order packets as lost packets, for anything still using UDP rather than TCP (and there's still some of that). So, being on a network where packet reordering is common causes more problems with SL than with more robust applications.

Networks are allowed to reorder packets, but lots of things work best when they don't. So, equipment vendors and service providers generally work pretty hard to minimize it. Nonetheless, it's permitted, and it happens, and applications & protocols running over IP should take that into account. (TCP does take this into account, but different implemenations may do it better than others.)

Not that any of this helps the OP at all. There's nothing we as users can do about UDP/TCP and packet reordering.

I doubt it's a firewall per se (if the firewall is working properly). A firewall that blocks SL would keep you from logging in and connecting to a region. Most default firewall configs for home networks don't block it, but many corporate firewalls do. When behind such a firewall, you'd see login succeed but connecting to region would return the "Despite our best efforts ..." message. It would do this every time, without variation.

*Try a speed test*

A poorly working firewall could be the cause, just as any poorly working component in the path could. Try a network speed test (google "network speed test" and select a few, especially the ones for your service provider or your geographic location). Post the results and we can tell you if it looks reasonable.

I'll add 2 cents:

What about the lines themselves?

My cousin had DSL that was "iffy" at times even tho the ISP Office is only 1 block away.

They discovered that the phone lines were just too old. Once our town had all the lines replaced with newer ones, his DSL service improved.

**edit**

To give an idea of how 'old' we're talking- Ma Bell was still in power, and our town had just finally replaced the last of the old wooden water lines.

I don't think there is anything specific about DSL vs. Cable, but you also changed ISPs.

Another possiblility is the distance you are from the central office providing your DSL service. If you are near the edge of your CO's DSL service area, the quaility can be 'iffy'. Most DSL providers have a 'safe' or 'reliable' mode that turns down the speed a little bit to get increased reliablity. My service is in one of these iffy areas and it makes a world of difference.

Move back home.

Since I became addicted to SL, I have a new make-or-break criterion for any new home we might move into. It's gotta have good high speed access.

/me makes note to self to lug SL-equipped laptop along on future house-hunting expeditions.

Ah yes...more details....

I run the current regular viewer....been on that since it came out, and again, no problems with it at all. Also been using windlight since it came out and never have graphics problems.

With my high speed cable I was able to run at high bandwidth and draw distance and I rarely had to change the settings.... really rarely had any problem at all aside from the very 'occasional' crash.

I'm thinking maybe it's the speed.....not a firewall...no firewalls here to interfere. And...I logged in easy......everything rezzed really fast.... After I teleported....I checked my stats and lag meter.....stats showed packet loss all over the place and lag meter showed yellow. After a reset my bandwidth and draw distance....I didn't crash. But that phone line theory is interesting...my sister said they couldn't get on line for months after they got DSL and finally they came out and replaced a line. (she clearly does not see internet as a priority lol)

But I just find it really interesting, the difference in performance based on the internet connection..... I've been in SL for 17 months using high speed cable and I'm one of those people everyone hates cause I so rarely have any problems with SL. lol

(incidentally....the real estate agent I've been in touch with said cable in this area sucks! she said can hardly ever get on in her office....and it's the same cable company that I had 2 states away and had no issues with)

With DSL, things like how far away from the central office (where the phone lines all go in your area) and the quality of the wiring really make a difference.

Is this a newly-built house? If not and you've got access to somebody handy, you might want to have them take a look at the phone wiring in your place. If there are any flaky connections, they can do bad things to a DSL line.

i used to have comcast..i loved after having them for a year all of a sudden at 8pm my ping on the gaming server i was playing on would go from 21 to over 500..but they didn't know why..which was their answer for everything ..that and we will send out a tech..

all i did was trace the nodes found the one causing it and told them if this is the way it is gonna be i'll be going to dsl..
here i am and a lot happier for doing it..

I also run way better on my At&t DSL then I ever did on Comcast. I hardly ever crash and it runs pretty quick for my crappy puter stats LOL

I remember one of Torley's videos suggesting that if you get packet loss, turning down the maximum bandwidth slider (network tab) can help lots.

Thanks for all the input~!

I'm not going to worry about it here.....but when we get into a new house I will definitely be looking into internet very carefully. My fiance is big into gaming and high speed is a priorty for him......he just always has to have the best in terms of technology. I can certainly maintain here for a couple months with this DSL connection....it's better than I expected actually.....and in terms of everything else I do on the web, it seems just as fast as cable. (I had Comcast too...in SC.... now I'm in FL and if Comcast has a bad rap here then DSL it is! lol)

What's also worth noting is my computer runs way faster than my sisters laptop. She got a new Dell a few months ago and has never bothered to adjust the start up features so the thing is so bogged down with useless programs...it takes forever to boot up.....and it's way slower on the web too. She's gonna have serious puter envy when she comes home later and sees my desktop set up with the giant moniter. LOL But, she'll be really happy that it wont take her 2 hours to get on line and pay bills! :p
