Does that mean even if I win, I still lose my money?

It means you do not get a payout.

Not like it hasn't already happened.

In that case, the most you can hope for is to send a notecard to the machine's owner (not the creator) and hope that they will pay up the amount "owed." If they don't, you might try filing it as "fraud" in the AR form, but don't expect LL to do much, since they supposedly tend to stay out of user to user disputes.

Just to add insult to injury: The script that's supposed to be paying you has absolutely no way of knowing that it can't pay, nor that it hasn't succeeded when it tries. It's one of the most brain-damaged parts of LSL scripting.

This must be the only game of chance still allowed... the chance that the owner of the game doesn't have any money for payouts.

Right, unless you contact the game machine owner as Raudf suggested, and maybe they'll check their account transactions and pay you. That's because the scripting function, llGiveMoney(), that tried to do the payout doesn't pay partial amounts: if there's not enough funds for the whole amount, nothing gets payed, and the script has no way of knowing this happened. Hence, even if the fee you paid into the game is still in the owner's L$ balance, you can't get it back as a partial payout, nor can the game know that it should refund you at all.

Of course you also have those that use alts to place the machines now, with no lindens to pay out from.

Kinda like some camping chairs that don't actually pay, just make you think they do.
