Question..... (aside from the on-going argument between my fiance and I.....he says SL is screwing up my computer....and I say it's his Call of Duty on-line because I never had any freezes before he started playing it....now we seem to have isues with the web freezing up....or have to ctrl/alt/delete to end task cause things just stop.....) But....that war can't be won between us LOL I didn't have problems until he came home from over seas and started his gaming.....but it could also just be timing. My question now is this....... why would my SL window being open or closed....effect whether or not I can browse the web. Normally....when I am in-world and I want to check a web page....I simply go to start menu and open my browser from there......I never minimize SL. I never have a problem getting on or surfing the net that way. However......if SL is minimized.....and we try to access the web from the desktop icon.....everything just freezes. This happened twice to my fiance....I had SL minimized cause he needed to find a document in the files and attach it to an email......and he was spitting explatives cause he couldn't get on the web. He shut down SL.....said it's taking up all the bandwidth and that's why we can't get on the web. But.....again, when I'm logged in.....I don't minimize SL and I never have a problem getting on-line......I showed him this. I can do any number of things while logged into SL and rarely do I encounter a problem with this PC. He remained unconvinced. But why would it be.....that minimizing the SL window while running.....would effect web browsing? Any takers??

The only thing I can think of is that by minimizing it, it becomes a background task set with a high priority - and as such, now no longer gives enough cycles to anything else that wants to run. When it's maximized, it may have a normal priority.
Not saying this is even close, it's just all I can think of.

Hmmm....ok.....that makes sense sort of......I'll have to check my priority settings. As for a Mac....no thanks..... I'm pretty happy with my windows. If I DO ever decide to pursue graphic arts more seriously....I will indeed be looking into a Mac tho Anyone else have any thoughts??

Do a google search for spybot S D, download and install. Use it to check what plug ins and add ons have attached to your browser. Sounds like one of the indexing or updating plug ins is getting aggressive.
Also, close all open programs, open a command prompt and type in:
CD %TEMP% <enter> cd .. <enter> rmdir temp /s <enter> (This will clear your temp directory. It is not unusual to get a error message that something could not be deleted. However, if you do not get a error message, do the next line) mkdir temp<enter>
then just do a exit, and restart your computer. Often times the temp directory will just keep growing until the computer has to labor to find a free file handle.

Usually for me, minimizing SL makes it become a background task with LOW priority. Starting another normal priority program when SL is like that causes resources to be released from SL and given to the other program... that's when SL brainfarts and freezes things up because too much is taken from it for it to remain functional. It also depends and what other program I try running with SL minimized. Photoshop doesn't bother SL one bit.. I can run numerous instances of it along side SL with no issues. Certain web pages with a lot of javascript functions can bork things as well. The biggest culprit by FAR though, is MS Outlook/Outlook Express. Every single time it goes to check for new mail, whether its when I first start it or when it "automatically checks for new mail every X number of minutes", my entire computer will lock up tight. It's so bad that I've gotten in the habit of doing ctrl-alt-delete and making sure msimn.exe (outlook express) isn't running in the process list before I can even start up SL at all. They both run fine by themselves, but not together.

keep an eye out for a virus and maleware/spyware also..i had to reformat my computer because of a virus taking over my browsers..i finally got tired of it and ended up formatting after two weeks of fighting the stupid thing.. the onyl anti virus that could find it was avg also..it was a virus that actually sends out little virus's to distract from it.. i tried downloading spybot search and destroy and it wouldn't let it run .i couldn't get into safe mode after a while.. but it all started with a slow take over of my browser..so i would do a good scan in safe mode with your anti virus and spyware detectors..
safe mode catches them most times because they are not active most times.. oh and it kept turning off my system restore as well so i could not roll back.
trust me not many virus i can not get rid of but this one was a pain in my butt and first one i ever felt the need to reformat from the infections so wide spread..
plus my isp anti virus was worthless anyways.. lol

Don't need that on a Mac! First off, you're not helping the OP one bit here. Secondly, if you really must open this debate in the first place, as a user of both Mac and Windoze systems, you're wrong. Macs are vulnerable to malware and spyware. There are merely fewer of them because it's a smaller group of users. Now, getting back on topic..... It does sound like you've got some things running that you don't want running on your system, but having never had this happen to me personally before, I'd be hard-pressed to determine exactly what it is. Sounds like some other people have some good ideas for you though. Good luck!

If you use Firefox, check your plugins and add-ons. I cannot remember the specifics now, but under the latest release of a few of them, they were making my whole computer sometimes lock for a few seconds. I disabled and/or uninstalled a few and life is good again.

Same recommendation with Firefox. Also get the NoScript plug-in for it. Works Wonders! Its nice to view a webpage without 10 billion Flash ads going on. It will also block any nasty "extra coding" meant to inject stuff onto your computer as you visit the webpage. Avoid using IE! See whats been installed lately. Defrag the Hard Drive. Check to see what processes are running in the background. Shut down unnecessary ones. I had to shut down the "Java Updater" cuz the lil' sucker enjoyed sucking up resources looking for updates. I run Call of Duty World At War and SL Windlight with no problems. As for the other "not so helpful" things posted here: Run Windows with a User account, not an Admin account. The "other" alternative might be virus free for now, but popularity (keyword) tends to make one a target
