Can I turn off group messages?

I'm a member of several groups in SL. Some are spammed often and I leave them as soon as I got the group gift...even if I think it's not polite to just grab the "goodies" and leave.

Other groups are by invitation only, so I can't leave them. They are not spammed often...but it's like taking a bath RL, you can bet that the phone is ringing just then even if it's been silent for hours.

So is it a way to stop group messages to pop up? The ideal would be to stop them and click on a button so they come up when I have time to read it. Of course I could miss invitations or secret sales. Fine, I will risk that.

There's an option under group info to stop receiving group messages....but I have that checked and still receive them anyway. I feel your pain, some of them just spam way too much. Ideally I'd like to just receive them via email and then pick and choose what I want to follow up on.

I have heard that v1.19 will fix this.

That check box is just for notices. It is broken and I hope there's a fix coming soon.

the proposed fix (for v1.19) is to default to do not recieve group IMs till you open the chat... a checkbox would be better... there are group IMs I always want to recieve and it'd be just as pain full to have to open those group IMs each log on =/

If you uncheck "Receive group messages" you won't get the messages only when you are offline. When you are online, you still get them.

Just to be clear, it's "Receive group notices".

And yes, online or offline I still get them.

There is a second "x" below the top right "X" in the chat box... It's a little tedious, but you can stop group IMs by clicking that after you get one. I'm not in many groups so it isn't a problem for me... I never put any effort into setting up 'no group chat' as a default. (^_^)

Plus... I like the jabber. The cartel stuff gets real silly somtimes. (^_^)y

I'm in twenty five groups, several of which are quite spammy and others fairly busy with appropriate on topic chat.

When group IMs come in nothing that happens bothers me much except for the blinking tabs on the group IM window. Just don't look at them.

I gave up on being able to use the "console chat", the sliding up the screen chat long ago. I'd like to, but it's just not useable with a bunch of chatty group IMs there.

When I want to be able to make heads or tails of the nearby chat I use the nearby window or "chat history" window, set to not show group IMs.

It's not ideal, but it does let you pretty much ignore the group IMs.

If you enter you text for the nearby folks to see in the regular chatbar text entry field then the chat history dialog stays semi-transparent so it doesn't completely block the view.

=====================

The "receive group notices" field has never worked for me so far as getting or getting group notices inworld. As was already pointed out it's supposed to affect group notices, and by design and in fact has no effect on group IMs.

I am a member of some large groups. Before I unchecked it, all group notices went to my mail when i was offline (sometimes 100+ a day). After unchecking it, at least the forwarding to my mail has stopped. :D

I'd like to see an option for IMs to not display here and show only in the Communications window, even with blinking tabs I could choose which to take notice of and still keep up with chat around me without opening the Chat History window too.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has the Communications window up anyway in order to IM friends.

I am on secondlife for a online social networking game where the goal is to find and meet new people and form friendships and have fun if i wanted all this 'spam chatter' i would have logged into IRC instead.

the nerve of some people in group chatting as if chattin is what they were built for.
