I have some "poses" which came in a free bundle. I have a vague idea I need to make a pose ball to use them. Is that correct?
To use them, you either use them directly from your inventory (as stated above), or else you need a scripted object to run the animation on you. These scripted objects can work in any number of ways; here are some examples:
- Poseballs
- Furniture with poses "baked in" (using something like the sit target positioner Lindal mentioned)
- menu-based furniture -- letting the user choose the animation by menu button.
- worn objects (attachments) -- for example, when you wear a pistol, it can put your arm in a pistol-holding position.
- AO or "Animation Override" which changes the way you stand, sit, or walk. Usually a HUD, but sometimes built into something like a pair of high heels that make a lady walk all sexy like.

But can they be used with other objects? Could, say, a bracelet contain a pose script which would activate when the bracelet is worn?
Yess.
To do the above, you need the appropriate scripts.
There are a number of freebie poseball scripts. You can find one via my FREEBIES profile pick (though you have to have access to adult land). The free sit poseball also comes with a dozen or so free sit animations, full perms for any purpose.
For menu-based furniture, find out more here:
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/In-World_Maker_Tools, which covers MLPV2 and a little about MLP. XPOSE is another option, though not a free one.
For simple application for a worn object, see if you can find a freebie beer bottle or cocktail. Many of these have free scripts that are suitable. Most need a simple mod to use whatever animation is in the object's inventory, rather than having to put the animation name in the script. IM me ingame if you want an example.
Usually people wouldn't want something like a bracelet to include a pose, since they'd like to wear the bracelet during normal activities. But I'm sure there are good exceptions to this general rule.
