If someone does not yet want to own land or buy stuff

(1) does it cost to be in SL and
(2) must a credit card be provided.

I had to provide a credit card to get access to this forum, but it does not seem to be charged, but a friend that I got to join got an email which said they were unable to bill her account (she had not given them a credit card), and that if they "are unable to collect the amount due within seven (7) days, your account will be suspended pending payment for an additional thirty (30) days." If it does not cost to be a basic member, what does she owe?

Your friend must have signed up for a premium account, which costs a monthly, quarterly or annual subscription. If you have not opted to upgrade to premium there is no charge. You need to have payment information on file to access the forum, but that does not mean you will be charged - it's to reduce the number of underaged people.

Did she sign up as a premium member? Has she been getting the weekly stipend of Lindens?

(10 No - you can enjoy SL for free, and you can still rent land as a free account member

(2) No - but as others have said you need it to read the forums

I doubt that she would have signed up as premium, and AFAIK she does not have any L$

If she did specify Premium can she downgrade to basic

She is reluctant to giving a credit card # if not actually buying anything, but I asked her to check it out because she is a good graphic designer and may well decide to set uo a store

She can downgrade to basic, but she will still owe the current billing.

What Chris said..... she needs to go to the my account page on the website.

It really does sound like she signed up as premium as I don't see what other money she would be due to pay otherwise.

She is definitely in Basic, but for some reason had a 9.95 charge. She called and questioned it, and they removed it

When registering there is a box that asks if you are setting up an alt (a second avatar) for which there is a one off charge of $9.95. She must have ticked the box by mistake. Sounds like it's sorted now though.

If she signed up from the same computer as you or some one else who uses SL it may be possible they flagged the account as an alt, which costs a one time fee of 9.95 if I understand correctly.

aren't alts free now?
I had no charge for my alts, and yes I checked the box that stated it was not my primary account (or whatever the box is called)

Did they finally bring that back? When I created my alt, I couldn't find a single blessed place to do that. Of course, I found out that they also no longer accepted my main's email account as a validation email...

I have just received one of these e-mails on my basic alt and her acount page has a minus figure on the account page of $11.69 which looks like monthy premium account plus vat.

It looks like some charges are getting posted to the wrong accounts. Good reason to stay in basic without a credit card as long as possible

To the best of my knowledge it never went away - every time I've created an alt it's been there.

The last couple of alts I created didn't have the option to be "paid" alts.

I just have to add here that I issued a support ticket this morning with my main account and received a reply and the fees corrected in an hour. Pretty good going on the billing side :)
