I want so bad to get started here in second life, have some fun and meet some people, however when ever i try to load all i get is an error message saying i need 32 bit color. Sadly I can not get that on this computer and my laptop took a dump this week :(
How can I get around this, it seems odd that you would need a nearly new computer to be part of this site.
Thanks for any help :)

I'm of no help with this sort of thing, but you might try the Technical form, its located here /111/1.html

Good luck and I hope you get in soon! :)

For a program like Second Life to require 32 bit color is not at all an excessive or extreme requirement.

A video card that meets the system requirements is what you need to solve the 32 bit color requirement.

It would have to be a very old graphics card to be incapable of 32 bit color depth at any resolution. The more speed in the graphics pipeline, the more whiz-bang graphics stuff one can render, so I wouldn't discourage investment in a good card, but just to get past the frustration of getting *something* on the screen, I'd want to make sure 32 bpp isn't an option for a lower resolution setting.

Might be a good idea if you'd post your system specs here.

What brand and model of computer, what kind of processor, what speed, how much ram.

I'm wondering if it might not even have an AGP slot.

Crazyness I had this exact same problem. It's totally stupid, but right click on the Second Life icon on your desktop, and choose 'properties.' In whichever tab it is (I forget) you have to choose 32 bit color... mine was set to default 256 colors. Lame, but true. That totally worked for me.

Maybe you just need to download and install a driver for your Video card.

If you don't have a driver on some cards that can still do 32 bit color, it may only show you 16 bit in your control panel>>>display properties.

Maybe thats all that's wrong?

Hehe. This reminds me of teh specs of teh first compuyter I ever installed SL on...

2 gb hdd
256 mb ram
pentium 100 CPU
1 mb graphic card

Even back in those halcyon days of 2003 or 2004, I don't think it ran SL. I have no idea why

I depends what you call "a nearly new" computer...

My old computer (pentium 4 2.4 Ghz, 1 Gb memory, ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card) does run SL not bad at all. And that thing is more then 4 years old (only the graphic card and memory was replaced/updated in that time).

Of course, it doesn't run as well as on my new computer, but it is more then workable!

My guess is that with such an old graphics card the rest of the computer won't be able to cope with SL once you do start getting it running....

If you want to run with the big dogs, you're gonna need a more current machine. My guess is if you can't support 32 bit color, your machine probably cant handle the client even if you could.
