OK, so now my opensims are up and running - Fatimas Dream, Fatimas Blush, Fatimas Romance and Fatimas Smile, seeing as how you asked :D - and ready for sailing, flying - Trout where are you?? - and general exploring so I guess I need to buy myself a yacht. I'm looking at something under sail, with a Victorian/Edwardian look and feel if possible.

So who makes the best in SL? I'm happy to commission work too, so any naval architects out there?

Trudeau comes to mind, but not sure their classic look is old enough to qualify as Victorian/Edwardian. I have the Tahiti Ketch and the Bluewater Schooner and am quite happy with them.

Thanks Kevyn - I was there yesterday and was impressed with the quality.. but I have so little knowledge in this area it's difficult to judge

I was just looking up yachts in wikipedia because for some reason I always picture motorized vessels. If your boat is going to be Edwardian/Victorian, it probably won't be motorized. Apparently there are actually four classifications of sailing yachts: Day Sailer, Weekender, Cruiser, and Racer. Maybe it would be easier to start looking by classification? I'm assuming you don't want a Racer, and maybe a Cruiser would be too big? Not sure. Just a suggestion...

Incanus, at the risk of saying something that you know better than I, let me mention that there are two broad classes of boats with sails. Those that work like all very simple vehicles -- you sit on them (or even in some cases attach them), and basically walk to move them in any direction. These range in size from canoes to full, gorgeous pirate ships. The sails may move, but are basically decorative.

Or, those that come with HUDs and actually sail according to the prevailing SL wind. They also have some provision for current. The racing groups in SL may actually set the wind in the racing sims for their regattas. If you never have tried this, it is fun. You can pick up a free (older) tako on the dock in Nantucket, I believe, an give the basic sailing-by-the-wind experience a try.

Again, apologies if you already own 20 boats or something :)

The titanic is a good one and is huge I believe it takes up 3 sims. sorry just seen you want to buy one, those take up alot of prims. I know people that bought them and can never put them out because they take up way too many prims or they lag

hehe - out of the 3.5K items in my inventory (and my better half wonders how I manage to survive SL with so little) I have NOT ONE BOAT lol lol. I rather fancy the HUD sailing thing... that's if I ever get the hang of gybbing my poopmaster or whatever the tarpaulin-speak is.... :D

Thanks for the link Oryx.... I was starting to think I might have to buy some sleek black monstrosity (they all seem to come with added bikini babes.... er.......) or actually (oh teh horrorz!) build one myself to meet the look I want and get the scripts separately

I've cruised and raced sailboats for many years, and I was impressed with how well the Trudeau yachts responded with respect to simulating their rl counterparts. One of the few non-air vehicles I've really been happy with in SL.

Technically the Titanic is a "ship" as opposed to a "boat" which is what a yacht is. :)

[Edit: Belay my last. Here's the technical definition: Among sailing vessels, the distinction between ships and boats is that a ship is a square-rigged craft with at least three masts, and a boat isn't. With regard to motorized craft, a ship is a large vessel intended for oceangoing or at least deep-water transport, and a boat is anything else.]

For real sailing vessels, I'm in love with Trudeau's "Trucordia" yawl.

For a huge, yet mobile, floating mansion, the "Karma", so big it's almost a mini ocean liner, is truly amazing. It will take a really big piece of land to support all its prims, though. There's one docked across the channel from the Trucordia on, I believe, FairChang Ibiza.

Homewood Yachts builds some very nice non-mobile yachts. These floating homes can be 70 meters or more in length, and feature things like multiple jacuzzis and helicopter pads complete with helicopter.

With the exception of the immense Karma, even the largest SL yachts have at least some issues with mobility and space...because of the difficulty in fine avatar movements, and the fact that the camera viewpoint is typically well above and behind the av. Low ceilings can make even a big yacht seem cramped.

I have seen a few boats that solved this space issue...but at the expense of being constructed in some very nontraditional ways. For example, I found a pirate ship that was basically one large, hollow room inside. Plenty of space, but not the sort of construction you expect to find in a ship.

do a search for Z-boat, or cavalier? something like that, it is a french word for the type of boat/ship it is, and find Zeja's pirate ship...its very cool, and has a functioning crows nest/lookout spot and a couple other places to ride on it:)

of course i am biased...once im in world i can find the right names...or search papameters, heck i could send you a landmark. there are several types of boats and even a submarine available there...many with the ability to sink one another too :)

Trout where are you??

Right here! Excellent! Another place to fly and sail, if I ever manage to find a boat/ship that I like, that is. I've looked at most of the boats mentioned in this thread and none of them are exactly what I want. I'm going to have to learn to build yet, I suppose.

While on the subject of vehicles, I spent a while racing stock cars last night. What a ridiculously good time. SL's physics are tortured beyond recognition by just about anything representing a legitimate video game but I honestly had the time of my life. I'm always amazed at what Sl has to offer to people who are willing to go look.
