I was trying (again) to put on a skin, but ended up with a gift box on my arm. (WHY is this so difficult? Why do you have to tp to a sandbox to wear something? Jeez. )
I tried Tools > Select Tool > Move, then Focus, etc to get the box off my arm, but can't detach it any more. Gawd what a pain.
Now I can't get the old pointer back and cannot move by double-clicking on the floor (Emerald).
(Boy, movement controls in SL are so poorly designed and difficult to use.)

Instead of using the camera and your AV - go to your inventory. Type in " worn" (without the quotation marks). You will find the object that you are wearing and just right click on the name and choose "detach".

Is this the official way to do it LOL ?

No but this is the best way to see everything you have attached. A lot of attachments like huggers, dance chims, and AOs are invisible and some times I lose track of what is where on my avie. Using "worn" in search lets me know why /hug is acting goofy when I don't realize that I have 2 huggers attached.

You were in build mode. When you mouse over a window, the build cursor will change back to the regular cursor. Just close the build window (little X at the top right) to exit build mode. Also, you can hit escape a few times to close everything and get back to normal.
