There's been a mandatory upgrade of the SL viewer and there doesn't seem to have been a thread or threads filled with righteous wrath about the resulting destruction of people's SL enjoyment.

Is there something with the forum posting system or what?

Probably because there is nothing left to upgrade for now that LL has dropped "The Big One." ;)

No.

Just everyone is too busy organising their stuff so that they can give it in a structured way to the people who ask "Can I have your stuff?"

That, or they are thinking about adult sex v. mature sex

It's possibly because there is no mandatory upgrade just now - except maybe for those who've been using old viewers.

With 3rd party viewers, there is never a "mandatory upgrade"

I'm using the standard viewer and the upgrade is optional.

There was a "mandatory" upgrade for those running RC versions. I also ran into the forced upgrade issue when I fired up my CoolSL-diff'd 1.22.11 viewer for the first time, but that went away after I ran it again. Haven't noticed this at all with the 1.21 viewers. But that could be because I'm not running the official viewers. *shrugs*

In my point of view, the uproar over 1.21 was because it was an epic failure. The somewhat peaceful introduction of 1.22 was because it's not ~that~ bad. Really... 1.21 drove me to go to alternative clients. 1.22 brought me back home. (^_^)y

I think I've been out of date then confused then wrong but not confused and now I'm confused again.

Is it true that the
current version "Second Life 1.22.11 (113941) Mar 6 2009 12:50:02 (Second Life Release)"

was NOT a forced upgrade?

I've got so many folders of SL versions I can't keep 'em straight anymore.

My regular SL current version is in a folder named "Second Life regular client" which I did to help me find it but that didn't seem to work too well. I think I have the SL client that goes with one of the Nicholaz versions in the folder with the plain "Second Life" name where the normal latest LL produced version should be.

The blog, jeesh, it doesn't work properly for me, and the feeds to the different blog areas come in the Flock feedreader with names like "Clearspace Server Syndication Feed" instead of something liek "Second Life Blogs - Upgrade team" or whatever that channel is called.

And the chat in the groups has been misleading, I guess there must be a high percentage of people using the release candidate all the time, so that's what the mandatory upgrade comments were about.

Suezanne. When I open my standard viewer, it tells me that there's an upgrade available. It also tells me that I don;t have to take it. I logged in earlier without taking it, so it's not mandatory.

I've used viewers with empy login screens now I don't even look at the login screens. I guess I need to slow down and pay attention.

Now that's I've updaded, there's nothing on the login screen except for the Grid Status display.

I think the changes were so subtle it wasn't that big a deal. The only thing different for me is I used to have blue text in chat when it's my own, but now it's white like everyone else's.

I also backed up my WindLight settings so as not to loose them in the upgrade. That has happened in the past for some reason.

The forced upgrade for LL 1.20.17 users won't happen until April 8 (probably actually the 9th).

I see that there may be some problem with it deleting your chat logs.

Those who care about their chat logs might want to have a regular backup system of some sort.

OK, I'll complain.

When I upgraded to 1.22 it trashed my settings. Again.

Linden Lab: if you are worried about graphic settings causing problems then stick them in a separate file from things like "yes I've seen all the newbie messages before" and "no, I don't want the search box in the title bar".

Well.......it works great for me. In fact..... the weird windows memory error messege that I was getting before...EVERY time I logged out......is gone. It doesn't happen at all with this upgrade.

I also didn't lose any of my windlight settings......which I've heard people complain about in the past. That happened to me 'once' with an upgrade. But this time they were all still there......except my day/night cycle. I had to go back in and re-do my presets....but that was kinda fun anyway cause I tweeked it a bit.

As for the graphic settings......um....yeah.......pretty much every time there's an upgrade, any saved settings are lost. I have to re-do all mine (big deal, takes all of 5 minutes) But I always thought that was just a part of having to upgrade.....newer viewer.....isn't going to 'remember' personal settings.

But I guess maybe that doesn't make sense, since it retains all the windlight settings I created...... still.....I could really care less about having to adjust it the first time I load an update....whoop-de-doo.....it takes longer for my bagel to toast then it does for me to re-adjust my settings. ;)

I was happy to download and install the upgrade: that dumbassed problem with palletized textures seems to have been fixed and so far I have been able to edit attached prims without crashing.

It would be good to retain graphics settings on installation but, like Milla, I don't need to do much to readjust my viewer.

I have been running the RC for quite a while, so I had not realized they had finally rolled it out to be the actual regular version.

I like that the Palletized texture thing is fixed and it definitely gives me better performance than the 1.21 set. The jury is still out on some other things, so I still sometimes log in with the Kirsten viewer or the latest Cool View

There is no such thing as a mandatory, or forced upgrade.

Put "-channel whateveryouwant" at the end of your shortcut.
