Hi all! I must admit to being overwhelmed with the geography of sl. I've mastered the mini-map, but the large map doesn't give me an overall idea of the continents and time zones. It didn't take long to figure out that there are time zones, because you can tp from sun to moon in an instant.

The big map just doesn't show the whole thing (that I can make work!). Any suggestions from you kind souls in the forum?

The SL world is flat. The mainlands are the larger chunks of land you see on the world map. The mainlands all operate on the same sun/moon time cycle.

Private estates are those thousands of individual or smallish groups of lands scattered far and wide. On those private estates, the owner has control of the Sun/Moon cycle. They can even set the time to be constant (for example, always midnight or always noon).

On top of that, you have the ability to control the time of day in your SL world no matter where you are. It's an option near the bottom of the "World" menu. If you prefer to live your SL in constant daylight or constant darkness, you can grant your own wish. Using the new Windlight version of SL, you can hit CTRL-ALT-E for even more options to customize the environment as you see it.

As for an SL globe, you could create one. Take several several snapshots of the SL world map. Stitch them together to form an image with a 2:1 aspect ratio. Import that image as a texture, then apply it to a sphere prim. Add the free "Rotation Script" for added coolness! If you make one, send a copy :)

No time zones, all are this same linden time. Each sim can have its own sunrise/sunise. I beleive it is a 4 hour "day) 3 hours of sun, 1 of dark. Estate owners on private islands can also set a different cycle. :)

I also have to admit not really understanding SL geography (mainland - outland - islands...) but I don't usually fly anywhere. I walk or TP and use search. As for "timezones", I don't think there's any such thing. Each sim owner chooses there settings which you can always change if you prefer. Not much help, I know, but if someone answers you I'll also be learning :)

Edit: Wow people are so much faster than me hehe

I like to keep up with the islands in SL. I dont have pictures of them but I just bring up the main map and start with "A" search and record all of the islands that start with "A". I do this through the entire alphabet for a complete listing of SL islands. There may be a much simpler way of doing this but it works for me. I visit the corporate islands for freebie scripts and items. IBM (lots of free scripts). HBO (newbie shapes and skins), and Nissan Altima (Free very nice Altima with hud). Also lots of tee shirts out there.

Thanks all! I didn't realize that there was less than a 24 hour "day" in sl. I'll be sure to check out the map tips.

You can get a quick impression of the size of the Grid by going to Land Sales on the SL website, and go into the buy island menus. Each tiny square is a region - it is quite amazing when you see it for the first time, especially when you compare it to one of the Grid maps from two or three years ago.

Many people believe that the world is flat. Keep in mind the possibility that it is locally flat, and is actually on the surface of some very large, non-flat shape. Eventually we might discover a way to sail all the way around.

The SL world is only relatively small in real terms - the islands are not very big - you could walk round the highways of Jeogeot (Southern Continent) in a couple of hours.

So, even if the whole of a hypothetical SL globe is as big as RL one, the little bit we call the 'World' would be virtually flat anyway!
