Inventory management: outfits

I know the basics of inventory management. I have everything organized into subfolders. I have a folder called "complete outfits" where I can just right-click and choose, "Replace outfit." The problem seems to be that I have to have pretty much everything in each of those outfit folders (such as the AO and other attachments) or they get taken off by the outfit replacement. Like the hair, if I'm wearing hair and I click a folder, if I don't have hair in that folder, I'm bald.

It doesn't seem like there's a way to have the av with hair and attachments and simply exchange the clothes w/o having to do it piecemeal. I am worried about accumulating outfit folders that contain everything. Does anybody have any tips for organizing complete outfits? TY.

Well, if the items are all copyable, you can have more than one folder containing them.

So, find a copyable hair, AO, and all the rest, and copy/paste them into a new "Outfit" folder.

Do this for each "outfit" you want to have.

Opening 2 inventory windows at once makes this much easier.

You can use the option "Add To Outfit" instead of "Replace Outfit". This will put the new outfit on you and leave your hair and such intact. Then you just manually remove any remaining bits from the previous outfit.

I never knew about this! Interesting. Of course I hardly ever wear outfits anyway. Maybe that's why I didn't know about this option.

What you want is a "base avatar" folder that contains the items you dont change or rarely change, such as shape, skin, favorite hair, eyes, and any HUDs and attachments you use all the time.

Then make a folder for each set of clothes/shoes/whatever that go together.

Use "add to outfit" on the folder you are changing to, and "take off" on the folder you are removing, in that order. That will replace any parts you had on already of the same type/attach point, then remove any residual ones from the old outfit.

Doing it in that order keeps you from being naked in between, so you can change in a public place.

I've always done the "replace outfit" option, although I can see the add and remove saving some space in my inventory. Especially since I have many of my outfits use the same hair styles, AOs and the like.

Hmm, maybe it is time for an inventory restructure. ;)

That is an awful lot of duplicating of items in inventory. Just think how much your inventory size can drop if you do not have to have the same standard items in every folder.

Given my inventory size already, I just cannot imagine having so many copies of my HUDs, hair, jewelry, and shoes.

Well, mostly it is just hair and some AO's (since a couple outfits have built-in AOs). For other HUDS and AO's, I have a separate folder I use to quickly add those when necessary. As for skin, eyes, shape, hair base, etc (things that aren't "replaced";), I keep in a single folder as well.

Of course, the problem I have is that my female alt has so many outfits it'll take quite a while to go through everything. Kalor only has one outfit currently. The rest are all separate items I never turned into outfits because I'm not logged in much with him. LOL

Oh, I thought you meant just one folder like that.

Maybe one folder per type of avatar, or type of roleplay/time period, then? For instance, Baroque, Victorian, modern, etc.

But more as a 'go to' in a hurry type of thing, than for every single outfit in inventory. Just a suggestion.

DanielRavenNest, I did not know I could use the "Take off" function on an entire folder. That would be the solution to my problem. I tried it just now and it worked. Yay!

Yep. I have a folder called "Add-Ons", where I keep that sort of thing.

I also have a couple of "complete avatar oufit" folders in case I suddenly find myself bald, naked and skinless. Because occasionally I still forget and drag a folder onto myself...

Mmm sometimes. And sometimes you'll get caught in between items rezzing and wind up momentarily topless or bottomless.

Hee hee. Well in my case, my avatar is a 3000 year old shape-shifting sorceress who time travels. Since she can change her appearance between human and non-human, animal and vegetable, I include not only complete outfits but also skin, hair, eyes, and--in many cases--shape in the folder. This allows me to change from medieval to contemporary--etc. I do all this and still have only 12,000+ in my inventory. How? Well I have a prim "file cabinet" where I store all of my builds, as well as texture organizers where I store all of my textures.

I try to avoid duplication in my inventory wherever possible. I have most of my clothing arranged in complete outfits (as well as having a folder for just tops, just pants, and just skirts, so I can mix-and-match). I use the "add to outfit" option whenever I change. I also make note of what outfit I had been wearing, so I can just right-click its folder and select "remove outfit". What makes my life easier is using a viewer that provides a "worn items" tab in the inventory. This is a HUGE time saver! CoolSL and Greenlife Emerald are among the viewers that support this.

I also have a "base avatar" folder that contains my most-used skin, shape, eyes, attachments, a set of hair, and a set of clothes, including shoes. I have this for those times when something goes terribly wrong while trying on clothes; for when I just need to do a quick "reset"; or for when I am naked on a pole one minute and in a PG infohub the next due to a sim crash.

Heh. :)

What I do is this. I have one folder named 'Always On'
- that holds my shape, skin, eyes, AO, ears, tail, and teeth. The items I want to always have on and which are more important than any outfit.

I then click outfit folder and choose 'add to outfit.' and after I build an outfit I go to Always On and add it last.
- I then go to the Worn tab of inventory and remove anything left from outfits I was formerly wearing that didn't get replaced. If you lack a worn tab, get a better viewer. :D I use Cool Viewer.

I can then go back into folders of outfits and see what was removed. Anything still on gets put into a new subfolder called 'Worn' so that in future I can apply that outfit by simply adding the Worn folder to my current setup.

I like the Worn Items tab. I use Emerald and it has helped many times. ;)

I don't recall if the default viewer had that or not. I don't think it did.
