Hi. I am new and cannot figure out why the purchases I made all say DEMO all over the avatar. If I bought them, then they are not demos, right? How can I get them off my avatar? Also, I hav e box stuck tome. I thas been opened many times but I cannot get it off... THe help section says there is a video about unpacking boxes but shows no link to the video.
thanks

Welcome to Second Life and boxes!

If a box is stuck to you, right click on it and either (from the pie menu) select "Drop" or "Detach" (the bottom of the menu). To put it back into inventory, right click on it and select "Take".

To open a box, drag it to the floor near you. Right click on it and select "Open". Then select "Copy to Inventory" or "Copy and Wear".

When you've opened it into a new folder in Inventory, just right click on the item(s) and select "Wear". That should get you started.

You might also consider doing a search (bottom of your viewer window), select "Places" and search for "Oxbridge". Open the browser link to Oxbridge and you should have a landmark (picture with "teleport" at the bottom) or a straight option to Teleport there. Go there and take all the tutorials...you'll be glad you did. Also "Gnubie" and "NCI" are useful searches for new residents.

Also, if you purchased something with real money, not for L$0 they should not be demos. L$0 items (which they probably were) may likely be demos. You really should take some of the tutorials in SL that I referenced in my previous posts before you hurt yourself :-) Your experience will be a lot more fun. Good luck and welcome!

Hi Oona;

Two different things to solve.

First is - Demos. A demo is not the full product. It is only a sample. It will frequently have part of the texture missing, or will have the word DEMO printed on it directly or hovering above it. That is so that people don't try to just wear the sample. Demos usually cost nothing or 1 Linden. The full product might cost a lot more than that.

The purpose of a Demo is to try the product and make sure it fits and that you like how it looks.

Second - How to open boxes.

Some things are already opened or unpacked when you buy or are given the items. Some are still in boxes. Since some items LOOK like boxes in your inventory sometimes the only way to know is to try to wear it, or to open it.

To open a box - Open Inventory. Drag the box from Inventory to the ground near your avatar. Right-click on the box, and choose Open. Then, choose Copy to Inventory. Everything will unpack into your Inventory where it can later be chosen and worn.

Once you've done that, right-click the box again, and choose Take. That will pick up the box, and avoid littering. :)

Now all that is only possible if the land owner allows things to be opened there. If not, then the box might pop onto your avatar. The box will also do that, cling to your avatar, if you right-click it in Inventory and choose Wear.

To remove things you don't want:

Open Inventory. Type WORN. Now anything you are wearing will be in bold letters. Anything extra, right-click the name of it in Inventory, and choose Detach or Remove. (You might wanna do that somewhere private)

How to wear things you do want:

Open Inventory. Type a keyword or find the item. It might be under Clothing or it might be below the trash can in its own folder. Find it, and right-click its name and choose Wear.

If you wear a dress in Second Life make sure to wear the little pants that go under it. Those will frequently be labeled "glitch pants." It will be in the same folder as the dress or skirt. If you forget those, you will feel a breeze as you walk around SL and also will give passersby a free show.

So, for now, remove the box and the demo with the above instructions. Oh, and if it's a skin you want to change, you don't remove those - you just put a new one on top of it.

Be sure to wear a bald cap under any 'prim hair' (the hair that looks like wigs) so it flattens your old hair and doesn't look like you are wearing two sets of hair.

Any questions?

Sometimes, also.. the demo and the real item can be named very similarly, so if you bought a demo, and then liked it and bought the full version.. then you might still be wearing the demo one when you think you're wearing the full version.

Another thing I've seen happen is there is a lot of haphazard stuff in some freebie locations. They may advertise a freebie skin for $L1, but it turns out to be a demo. Be very cautious with free shoes. You sometimes get just for one foot.

I think this makes for a frustrating experience for new folks. This sort of thing should be monitored more closely. By and large though, the freebie places are a good way to start with a variety of fairly decent items that make you feel not quite so new. Jackie's suggestions of NCI is a good link to lot of freebies. also try "freebie" in search.

Hi, Oona & welcome to SL.

Ah...you're going through the "box ritual" formerly called "box head" because that was the attachment point to which an unopened box or object defaulted. Fortunately now it's the hand.

I wore an entire prefab Swiss Chalet for about a day until some kind soul helped me take it off. (A few people commented on my "unusual hat."
