I've got a simple object-with-a-script-in-it I created and own, but I don't have copy or modify perms on it or on the script inside it. It's been like that since I transferred it to my group and shortly after returned it to myself, which was about 18 hours ago. I've tried wearing the group owner tag - that makes no difference. In my inv, it says " no copy)(no modify)", yet my name shows as both creator and owner on Properties. When rezzed, the edit window says "You cannot modify this object", " no copy)(no modify)" for the script, and still my name for creator and owner. The only options I have available are "allow anyone to move", "show in search" and "for sale" Fortunately, it's only a minor problem in the case of this object - I'd only lose about an hour's work if I couldn't edit it - but I'm more than a little concerned about the whole business of deeding and returning if it's going to screw things up like this on higher-value objects. Plus, I'm more than a little baffled, to say the least. Versions are: both RC20.10 and 1.19.1 for the client, 1.22.3.89352 for the sim where it's rezzed. Any ideas?

Right, it behaved exactly as expected.
When an object is deeded to a group, it is *transfered* to the group. Next owner permissions apply. When you first owned it, the object and script apparently had next-owner perms set for transfer but not copy nor mod. And as soon as the group owned it, those permissions applied.
Permissions are not sensitive to who's named as creator.
One deeds items to a group only for *very* specific purposes. (These include parcel media and audio, some parcel access functions, per-resident primcounts.) I generally combine all my scripts that require group ownership into a single prim per parcel, just to minimize this.

Ah, thanks for the quickly reply, Qie - it makes sense now. I'd been thinking of group ownership more like temporary stewardship than an outright transfer, and that returning it merely 'undid' the act of deeding.
Looks like I need to be more careful in future!

I'm assuming this is what happened when one of my tenants deeded a radio to the group the other day, when I looked at it there was no script in the radio at all. The radio didn't need to be deeded to the group to work, but my tenant had assumed it did as a radio often does need to be deeded to the group.
I ended up buying him a replacement.

Is deeding it to the group the same as checking "share with group" in the object's edit window?

From: Quaintly Tuqiri Is deeding it to the group the same as checking "share with group" in the object's edit window? No, but you have to check the "Share with group" box in order to get the "Deed" option to highlight so you can select that (and then only if your group role has the ability to deed objects to the group). But Sharing with group has its own pitfalls, notably that it lets anybody in the group "Take" the object, which can be... surprising.

Thanks for clearing that up, Qie. I've been confused about that one for awhile!
