Hi - this is happening to a friend and not me, actually:

He can't stop walking or flying, sometimes the avatar goes away entirely, the menus at the top of the client won't respond and even typing is slow... relogs, reinstalls are not helping.

The situation goes from 'drifting avatar and inability to type easily' to no avatar or menu functionality at all.

Anyone know what might be going on?

Have him/her turn off anti-virus software and see if it's interfering with the client running properly?

It sounds to me like something has taken his network bandwidth way down, Desmond. If he is on wireless, perhaps some new objects are blocking his signal, or more people are sharing it than before? If he is on broadband, he should turn his router/modem off for 15 minutes and try again. If it's still borky, have him test his bandwidth ... often these small access routers/modems develop issues. As a last resort, call the ISP!

Because SL is streaming video, users will often see network hits first in SL.

Good luck!

I have also seen this happen when, for some reason, I get a weak signal between my wireless keyboard and its receiver. If your friend is using a wireless keyboard/mouse, check the battery level and make sure the receiver isn't too close to the monitor.

Interesting! I'll have him try that.

I'd hate for Second Life to lose a resident over something this ridiculous.

Thanks everyone.

I am the friend Desmond is describing. This does not seem to be a bandwidth problem, I'm getting 11,279 kbps downstream and 1083 kbps upstream. Wired, rather than wireless keyboard and mouse. Running a Mac so AV isn't an issue. I've shut down every other running program while trying to run SL.

When I run the stats bar, FPS on the client is under 3 fps - but it's always been that way, this seems to be a problem with SL on Macs. Bandwidth is 250+.

This problem occurs when running the production client or the latest RC (RC5).

Do you have a decent ping to the sim you are in?

Thanks, Felix.

Ping seems to be running 100-700 ms or so while the bug occurs. Is that good? I don't know what a good ping is considered to be.

Frame loss is zero.

FPS fluctuates wildly actually, between 1 and 15.

I should note that I've TPed to three different sims with this bug and had the same problem with all of them.

I'm by no means any expert on this but I have used SL enough to know that when my ping gets abnormally high and is fluctuating badly, it is an issue with my ISP. If that is not the issue then perhaps something has changed with a firewall you are using. I would try to power cycle your modem, router and computer to see if that helps any. Basic troubleshooting I know, but it is the best I can offer. :(

Actually, a couple of people have suggested power cycling the modem and router/firewall and I haven't tried it yet (it would require actually getting up out of my chair and walking across the room WHAT ARE WE LIVING IN MEDIEVAL TIMES OR SOMETHING???!!!!!). So I guess that's my next step. Thanks!

Oh, a Mac? Is this the release candidate? That might be the SL-thinks-the-mouse-is-a-joystick problem.

Preferences, Input and Camera tab, Joystick Setup button, make sure the Enable joystick box is not checked.

Nope, it's not the Preferences-thinks-the-mouse-is-a-joystick problem - I've had that and it looks completely different. Moreover, this bug happens on both the RC and the mainstream client.

I tried cycling power on the cable modem, and router/firewall. Didn't help.

You might try taking your computer somewhere else and see if the problem stills happens.

A couple of updates on the Jira issue you commented on at:

Also look at this thread in the mac discussion:

Thanks, Ciaran. I'll try re-setting the PROM.

Moving the computer will be a project - I'm running an iMac with a 24" display so it's not just a matter of closing up the laptop and trotting off to the nearest Starbucks. :)

SuzanneC, your suggestion gave me an idea - I tried logging in to SL with a different computer on the same network. And I did not see this bug occur on that computer.

I've also tried doing a clean re-install of the client, deleting both the application and the entire Second Life folder in ~/Library/Application Support. That didn't work either.
