Im no tech and I suppose relatively new to sl but the two things I would love to be able to do when building are to cut holes anywhere on a shape (aren't doors and windows frustrating - and more importantly prim consuming ) and secondly to put text, letters and numbers on to shapes without having to import signs I created myself in an art software package.
Does anyone more informed than myself and with a little more tech knowledge know why two such seemingly simple features are not available and - more importantly - whether they are likely to be in the near future.

The good news is, you can cut holes in objects.
I believe its in the "object" tab of the edit menu. You can also change the shape of that hole (Eg put a circle hole in a square object).
Bad news is, No inworld text editor. I did find a device that typed, but for each letter, 1 prim was used.

Quote - but for each letter, 1 prim was used. Ouch...so calling my new ship the 'Starship Rhamphorrynchus' probably isnt advisable then

Thanks for the offer... I can make signs in JASC's paint shop pro and upload 'em but I think it would be better for everyone if there was a feature which allowed the application of text 'inworld' I can undertand why manipulating shapes might be difficult but I would have thought that a text addition tool would have been a fairly simple addition.
The only thing I find complex is making the text appear on a tranparent background so I can apply it to a transparent prim. It seems a bit hit and miss - if anyone uses Paint shop pro 7 and can tell me how to get it right Id be grateful.

theres also xy text, which isnt perfect but handy if you need dynamicly updated text on a prim, basicly its got all the letters on a texture and it offsets that texture to show the word(s) handy aint it you can have 3 6 5 or 10 letters per prim, but its not exactly lighting quick
