To be more specific, I just bought a new macbook pro and was excited to think that I could play SL with less issues than my previous laptop. I can run the client on either system but for some reason after a while the client (on the mac) will just freeze up and lock down my whole computer forcing me to hard reset. Which I'm sure isn't good for the computer?

It also runs much slower than it did on the HP I was using before hand.

So I was wondering if it might have something to do with my system specs or the actual client for mac operating systems?

--Specs just for reference since I'm sure it's going to be asked

2.2GHz processer
2GB RAM
GeForce 8600M GT graphics card

Anything else, just ask and I will do my best to provide. Thanks!

force quit under osx is alt+command+ escape ...remember it you'll be using it alot with sl :)
most of the time there's no need to restart, as it's just the sl client that has locked up not the os.

My friend was a very active SL player, he had a mac. Awhile back there was a new client release and ever since then he could never get it to work. hes no longer on SL because of it.

You might want to post this in the Mac technical area to get more responses, but from what I recall from others' experiences there seems to be an issue with the SL Mac client and the Nvidia graphics drivers for the new MacBook Pros. SL apparently does not like the 8600M GT card/drivers. My MBP has been on backorder for a while and I'm still driving my PowerBook G4, so I can't test this theory...

Also, the Mac client is just not quite as fast in some ways as the Win version. I have no definitive answer as to why (although I suspect it's a sloppy job of porting from the Win client).

Some have suggested that this may be corrected by a rumored 10.4.11 update to OS X in the form of new Nvidia drivers.

Good luck and enjoy your new MBP!

It's not much help, but perhaps some hope: Linden devs have been working with Apple to get a fix for a driver bug for the nVidia cards, which might possibly be the problem. One other thing to be cautious about with any laptop is cooling: the more powerful the graphics chipset and faster the CPU, the more heat will be dissipated inside that tiny box, so if the vents are even slightly blocked, the OS may try to step down the processor to protect from heat. (That may not be the problem, but if the new machine's specs are better than the old, yet SL is running more slowly, something is amiss.) As Deej suggests, the Mac technical forum might be worth a scan, and the jira, for more OS- and card-specific clues.

This is a bug, reported two month ago, classified as 'critical' on the jira issue tracker:

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1749

Poppy Linden is working on a fix (I hope!)

Please vote for it :)

you'll get used to the lockups eventually - and you have plenty of company since the Linden's own statistics show one quarter of the sessions end badly. It has been that way since january

As others have said, it is a video card issue with the Mac. I use a MacBook when I travel on business, and the performance for SL is *much* worse than it is on my desktop PC that has similar specs. Hopefully there will be a solution for the Mac people soon.
