Max distance between your camera and you

A facility in another VW allows you to browse through your landmarks and as you highlight each one your camera goes there instantly so you can see who or what is there before deciding whether to tp there yourself.

This got me thinking. Is there anything in the mechanics of SL to prevent a similar facility here? What is the current maximum distance away from the avatar that you can send your camera.

In addition to the draw distance slider that maxes out at 512m, there's a debug menu command called renderfarclip that lets you set it to thousands of meters away. But we all know what a strain high draw distance settings are.

As far as I know, there is no way to quick jump your cam around, outside of your sim, and maybe slightly into the one next to you.

The problem with cam use is, that when zooming far away of your avatar, many tiny/small object won't be visible from the cam view. Only big object, and land deformation is visible.
The farthe you zoom, the less you will see eventually.

Does each location in this VW have screens on the wall with a large eye on them? The potential for mischief with that ability enabled in SL (spying on people, even from halfway across the grid etc) would be doupleplusungood, I think.

The limit to the distance you can move the camera and still see objects is about 512 meters. You can extend the draw distance to 4096 meters, but beyond 512M, only terrain will rez.

Long ago there seemed to be no limit, I could have draw distance set to 128M and pan my camera several sims over. Objects rezzed according to camera position and not avatar position like now.
