I've really enjoyed reading the "message from the past" thread, hearing what folks would advise themselves to do differently. I didn't post a reply as I'm still relatively new and still figuring things out, so not really the best person to give advice lol. Some of the replies had me wondering though what sl actually looked like when it started in 2003 and so I thought I would ask if anyone had any pictures from way back when, that they would be willing to post on here. Hope this is OK as I guess it's not a question in the strictest sense.

I recently put a few 2004-2005 pictures on Koinup, in their "Golden Age of SL" group. http://www.koinup.com/group/SecondLife-2004-2006/ Great set! One can also search for pictures by sim on Snapzilla, and find some of the 2005-2006 shots there. _____________________

Some of the replies had me wondering though what sl actually looked like when it started in 2003 and so I thought I would ask if anyone had any pictures from way back when, that they would be willing to post on here. Hope this is OK as I guess it's not a question in the strictest sense. I only wish I'd taken pix, I only have mental images, sorry. I knew SL was something big/different as soon as I read about it in a game magazine, but everyone around me thought it was st00pid (still does.) I just remember lots and lots of empty land, one big house that I really coveted but no one would explain to me how to get, (just "no you can't buy one and no I won't tell you how to make your own." Lol) well the one person I ran into, at least. haha He did tell me I could get my own land, but I couldn't understand what size, for the life of me. I said I'd like land on the water and he said there was no guarantee it would stay that way. I remember it was really dark and I couldn't see much. The landscape felt lonely and barren to be honest. At a later point I ran into another house that had 'sex animations' and I recall feeling shocked (that may have been later, in 2004, not sure.) I am not sure if all these memories are from 2003 or some from a bit later on. I was actually in the beta I think cos I remember being offered lifetime membership. I wanted to get it but again was outvoted, and I think my original SL name went offline with the no. And yes it's okay to just talk about SL in here, enjoy the off topic forum while it lasts.  _____________________

Thanks Osprey, those pictures are great, I really enjoyed seeing how much things have changed. I never thought to look elsewhere Marianne so thanks for the tip, I'm off to search now
Im the same as you Clarrisa, I wish i had taken pics right from when I first started, but hindsight is a great thing lol. Thanks folks for your lovely replies _____________________

I started a thread in the gallery section for people to post 'then and now' pictures of themselves as newbies and in the present. That might be worth a look.

Kobi, if you haven't explored early Second Life in YouTube yet, you could take a look at the movie that James Linden made about Lindenworld in 2001, which is an eye-opener, as well as some of the early (2003) trailers for Second Life.
