Very basic question....

When I logon, I get taken to a page showing my SL account information. Try as I might, I just cannot find how I get 'onto' the mainland (ie enter the Second Life world). What do I need to do - am I missing a link, do I need to downbload some software...?

Thanks

Hi Squirrel, if you're just logging into the website then you won't be able to enter the world there.

You need to download a client, the latest official client is available here:

Yes, you need to download the viewer, it's not available through the web pages:

Welcome to SL. I would spend a bit of time learning on Orientation Island before jumping into the big world, then you will be more prepared.

Really helpful. When I have the viewer ok, how do I get to Orientation Island?

You know this question has come up several times.

Makes me think the Lindens could be a little bit more specific how the system works in their sign up documentation.

The current system is a 3 step process.

1: Create and Account
2: Confirm e-mail address
3: Download and Install

It cannot get much easier....

EDIT: My guess is when they do step 2 it takes them away from the sign up page and they forget step 3....

Doesn't the "confirm e-mail address" take them back to a web page? If not, it should and that web page should make it very very clear that a client needs to be downloaded and installed.

Though I do remember one portal where and I signed a couple of alts up and never got the confirmation email. Then I had to call LL to get the password straightened out because it was also a signup portal that assigned a password rather than let you choose one. So in that case, I never saw anything that was very obvious about downloading a client.

That could be it exactly.

Is there a button that says "Okay you are set up - Click to install!"

Some people might think that Second Life runs off their web browser after all.

Many worlds do run off the web browser so it would be a easy mistake if they played one of the others..

When you get the e-mail it makes you click a link to activate your account but I don't remember what was on that page.

The activation link takes you to step 3. Download and Install.

I imagine you cant avoid everyone confused by this .. but with their massive churn rate, I would think it would be a priority to fix even little things like this one.

when I first signed up I did just that couldn't figure out how to log in lol.

I don't even remember if there was a conformation e-mail.. come to think of it I did the whole design your AV on the web page.

with alts created recently, I don't remember getting or using a conformation either... but maybe because I have clients already and I just log on in I don't pay attention to them.

it needs to be on the first step "Download this to play/login" step 2 "download this" step 3 after conformation it should auto take you right to the download page.

I don't think it does and I think as some one else said it hangs there.
