Island owners: Estate tools..worth it?

I have focused on building a community on connected mainland sims but wonder if there is any advantage to having the Estate Tools that comes with island ownership.

I chose mainland because I thought that it would be easier to sell the land if I needed to cash out and therefore I would have some chance to recoup my investment. I also like having some other people own land in the region because I like having neighbors.

It seems to me that it must be easier to build a theme on an island because it is a world on to itself.

As an island owner, what Estate Tools do you use a lot? Are there some you don't use at all?

Are they worth the extra $100 a month in tier? Or are there other advantages that make it worth while to own an island?

we just changed all the sand to snow :)

Edit: also when we ban someone they're banned, either on the island or across the whole estate.

problems with run away scripts, locate and return to owner

organise our own restart parties

delay Linden restarts

all good

You are on the right track of thinking.

I would say what I enjoy most about estate ownership is the ability to find nasty scripts that may lag your sim, this would include being able to restart the sim manually without assistance of LL. Also its nice to alter your land texture. Having the ability to split and divide land as needed and allow the customer to take possession of the land and do their own settings.

The estate tools are definitely not worth a extra 100 USD a month. But I have a class 4 island so I am on the old tier rate.

I sell parcels to people on my island and tenants have full control over it. Whats nice is that you can reclaim the land even if itis not group owned. You can restrict resale and ban from all of yoru islands at the same time. You can also change land textures and controlthe sun and moon. My favorite is sending out the blue box messages to the entire sim.

I just thought of this, but I believe you can rollback your own estate. Never needed to do this myself but it may come handy if you need it... as Mainland does not do that by your request.

As one of the lucky ones still in Sl during the lockout, I can confirm that estate tools do NOT allow you to rollback.

Right, it's just a sim owner can submit a rollback ticket at the support site and it will be honored, whereas it gets a lot more complicated on the mainland.

Because I own most of the sims I bought, I have been able to get the Lindens to look at script problems and restart the sim fairly easily and quickly.

Changing the terrain sounds neat...looks like having an island gives you more of a tool set for designing and creating.

Is a roll back when you restore the sim to an earlier version? A saved version before a disaster? Like a restore point in Windows?

I suppose another advantage would be that you can expand (although it would have to be a whole region at a time) whenever you wanted to.

Not to forget you can set the avatar limit up and down - you want a big party: let 100 people in (and live with the lag, lol). Also the terraforming limits are much higher, and you can upload premade terrain files (make them yourself or buy them, at slexchange for example).

Firstly, if you are geting a private sim, get a Class 4, unless you are going into a EXTREMELY lag heavy business. Same tier as mainland, for virtually the same service.

Secondly, mainland is good for somethings, bad for others. It depends on what you want your land for. Yes, the land tools are a gem, but if absolute resale value is your goal, then an island won't do. If you go private sim, just make sure you don't overpay. You'll likely get your money back in selling the island if you change your mind, and since you'd be owning a class 4 sim, you wouldn't have to make tier based decisions. Just make sure you give yourself more TIME to sell. You can instantly sell mainland. Selling islands takes at least 2 weeks to do it right, a month to break even, a bit more to profit. It's a myth that island sales are always at a loss, if planned well, you can even make money, but you can't just put them up for sale and be done in a few hours. They aren't as liquid as mainland.

Advantages of a private sim compared to mainland:

Creation / Looks:
1. Setting ground textures, and the way they flow over the land
2. No terraforming restrictions (no. 5m up/down limit)
3. Setting water height
4. Possibility to upload raw files to immediately terraform and parcel a complete sim instead of using in world tools.
5. Setting telehub/entry points for complete region
6. Controlling daylight cycle or fixed light (with windlight complete atmospheric control)
7. Choosing your own name, position on the grid and region descriptions

Management:
1. Possibility to get detailed information on running scripts, physical objects
2. Complete region management instead of per parcel (ban lists etc.)
3. Appoint 'estate managers' to manage complete regions
4. Setting sims private/public (removing them 'off' the grid while still giving access to limited groups)
5. Simple restarts/resets when stuff is messing up
6. Rollback requests
7. Selling and revoking of sold parcels
8. Setting max. number of allowed avatars

Prob. several more ;)
