How To I Get Rid of A Pest?

I seem to have this person who will not leave me alone - well, actually it's my alt that is being stalked by someone. I do not even really know him. I wandered into a room where he was with another women, just talking. I apologized, we spoke for a few moments. I guess he like my looks, and since I happened to meet him when I was here only a week or so, he asked to be a friend and I said yes. Bad mistake.

Anyway, I totally forgot about him. Weeks have gone by. Many. I took him off my friend list because I've wised up. He's no friend, right?

Suddenly, he notices I'm not there and he keeps sending me IM's asking me why I dumped him! Why aren't we friends? I explained that we don't really know each other, and besides, I'm involved with someone. He says he understands, but keeps on bothering me every couple of days. Geez, I barely spoke more than a few sentences to this person and I'm considerably cute, but I'm no raving sex goddess! What is with him?

So, how do I get rid of him for good? I'm going to ignore the message I got this morning, obviously ("I miss you!" Ick. How can you miss someone you don't know?). Should I just mute him? Get my new love to kick his ass? Report him? I certainly have tried the gentle, sweet approach already.

If I understand this correctly - your alt is stalking you, and you want to know how to get him to stop?

Don't log him in.

But seriously folks...

Just tell him to leave you alone. Some people need to be told. If he persists, mute him.

Thats how I first read it, but I think she means her alt is being stalked, yes?

Yes, my alt is being stalked. And I have already asked him to stop, several times. Nicely. Yep, mute will have to be the answer!

1) Do not contact him. Stalking is all about eliciting a reaction. As long as you feed the fire it will burn.

2) Mute him and ban him from your land (if applicable). Thus you will not receive any IMs, etc. from him.

3) Don't hesitate to AR him (w/o any discussion, warning, etc.) if he starts to grief you.

This should stop the nuisance pretty fast.

However, if now your alt starts stalking you, I recommend professional help from a shrink :D

If you've asked someone three times to please leave you alone, it's time for the mute button. The mute button rocks! Someone should write an ode to it.

And if they continue to bother you then I agree with everyone else. It's time to AR them.

Unfortunately this is not always as effective as you'd think.

I just muted him - hopefully, this will be the end of it (one can only hope!)

You could always tell him you're getting into Gor and want him to wear your collar. This could, of course, backfire, but odds are that he's thinking the other way around :) It's a calculated risk.

That is the most effective method but now be wary of strangers as he too has the ability to create alts. My SL wife has had a stalker bothering her for over a year and we continually mute and ban his alts. The current count is over 10 as we keep a list.

Only when Congress is in session.

Have you ever got the 'user is not online message will be stored' message? Keep a copy of that handy and whenever he IMs you just shoot that back to him.

That'll still show with your name in front of it as regular IM though. However if you put it as your busy message, it would show the proper way :).

ODE TO THE MUTE BUTTON
(Dedicated to live music fans who like to HOWWWWWLLLLLL)

Mute, O Mute!
Thou art better than a newt.
Thy powers far surpass those of a
Fallingwater boot.
Thou art the sort of tool
That makes me feel hirsute
And capable of anything
When I have the power to Mute.

OMG! I love it!!! You just make me laugh so hard I almost snorted my water through my nose.

And congress is in session so the stalkers should be busy with them.

That's the beauty of it! The error shows up with your name before it. He'll also see the 'so so is typing' message and it won't be an instant reply as you have to cut and paste. You just keep replying the same way to all his messages.

Muting is twice as effective if you tell your biggest gossip friends he was a crazy stalker first.
