Is it possible to make an object that allows only a limited number of transfers, then becomes non-transfer? I have an item that I've made as copy/non-transfer. I'd like to allow a friend of mine to distribute this, but to have the copies that he distributes be non-transferable after they leave his possession. Is there a way I can do this?

From: Illusion Panache Is there a way I can do this? You can make an object that'll appear "no copy/transfer" in inventory that has "copy/no transfer" inventory items inside and it can be passed around until someone actually rezzes it. That likely won't do much good in your case though so a vendor is probably the best solution.

No way to do it directly, but it has been asked for a few times. There is probably a jira about that.
As a work around, I have seen products sold before that are normally no transfer but also have a gift box -- not your typical buy as gift option, but more in the line of a gift card. Your no transfer item would be in a server you own while your friend (or any other distributor) sells tokens. Th final consumer would then res the token or otherwise activate it and the server would deliver the product.
I need more coffee before I can chase down all the loop holes and work out exactly how to do all this through scripts ...
Also, you might look at using a reseller vendor you could get from most any networked vendor system; maybe have a look at the LOOK Book catalogs. These might work for you and are ready made.

You can do a number of things to simulate such functionality but the reality is that "no" it cannot be done reliably. A person can always go to a no-script parcel, and take the time to go through 255 prims in a link set to find all the re-script rezzers, self delete scripts, etc..etc..
I actually had an item with near a hundred prims that had scripts that re-rezzed the primary engine scripts which auto-deleted the object on rez "unless attached" and all sorts of other non-sense to prevent you from rezzing it and actually looking at the item unless worn. SO i got so mad that i just went to a no script parcel where i could rez and sat and ripped this 2k Linden object to shreds until i had removed all the stupid -self deleting, script replacing- madness the creator had put into the object. The lesson being if you do not want people examining your items, just don't give them away or sell them.
