I don't think there's a term for this but I am suffering from it a lot, so I thought I'd ask... does anyone know the underlying cause of that JumpCut type of pause, where your av just keeps on walking? You can pan around yourself as you walk/fly, but you can't cam about or change course and eventually (sometimes half a minute later) hte end of the rubber band is reached and you SPANG back to where you started.

It seems to be a central server thing, because when it's a problem I can see other avs doing it around me. Or is it a packet loss thing? Should I be busting up some settings to track it down?

Don't think you can do much really it comes and goes.I tend to switch viewers when it happens and that helps sometimes.

FOr me this kind of rubberbanding is usually lag related. Many Many possible causes.

Id start by checking empty sims to see if it happens to you there.

Then Id work on dialing back graphics settings until I found one that minimized it on the empty sim.

In crowded places its GOING to happen. Assuming you can move at all. ;)

Those are the cheap fixes.

More expensive include.
Add more memory
faster processor
better video board
faster internet connection

and after its all siad and done It will STILL happen occasionally particularly in very crowded places

Server side lag. Not much you can do about it.

This "rubber banding" is the biggest issue I have running SL for the past few months.

Yesterday I was in SL for an extended period of time with little or no problems. I logged off for an hour and when I logged back in I could barely move with out experiencing this. Logging out and back in again only improved the situation slightly. I didn't try using a different viewer.

I have no idea what the root cause for "rubber banding" is but it seems odd that it would change so dramatically from one session to the next in a short period of time.

It seems more pronounced, at least for me, in Zindra. Rubber banding and sinking into the ground while walking.

Does anyone else remember the rubberbanding And sinking in the ground which eventually ended up snapping you into a void from which there is no escape but a relog?

Was real common in 2004

As I said earlier there are many causes. SOme are User machine/hardware based, some are network based (SL's ISP, The Net in general, the users ISP).

The only things we really have much control over are our own hardware and to a lesser extent our own connection.

I can honestly say though that compared to when I began SL things are MUCH MUCH better and this does not happen near as often as it used to.

It helps to understand the cause of it.

The server controls you avatars position. When you hit a movement key, the client tells the server you hit it, the server then moves you accordingly and reports back to client with your new position and what direction you are moving in.

When this problem happens it is because your client was told by the server that your avatar was in movement, then for whatever reason never hears back from the server. Becuase your client got nothing back from the server it has to assume you are still moving.

Eventually the server responds and says "hey what are you doing all the way over there, you are supposed to be here!" hence the rubberbanding back to your actual location.

In the case of it being permanent, and you have to relog, this is just becuase the server never ever responded and eventually gave up and dropped your connection.

The term "JumpCut" sounds like a problem often experienced in melee combat systems like Samurai Island, where you attempt to jump and then quickly attack while still 'preparing' to jump, before the script realizes you are no longer on the ground (and therefore shouldn't be able to attack).

In those cases the problem is due to how the Second Life viewer handles jumping. Essentially, when the viewer sends the jump command, it actually waits for the "prejump" animation to become visible before continuing with the jump. If an animation override (or scripted weapon) effectively hides the prejump animation, the viewer will not be able to continue processing the jump, and this leads to some very strange behavior. Often you'll be stuck in a single animation, able to basically slide around on the ground, but the movement keys will no longer work quite as expected. It also frequently results in the 'rubberbanding' behavior described by others above.

There are a few 'special' animations that have actual viewer behavior associated with them, this is just one example.

I've seen it happen in other situations as well, but it's quite common in melee weapons. It's a major pain in the ass for weapon developers, and is symptomatic of Second Life's poor animation handling.

I noticed for the last few days it seems like I am running into obstacles while walking and dragging around in an unusual way but my frame rate is in the upper 60's when that happens so it sounds like something done got broke..

Yes. It's called http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-4616.

It has nothing to do with your PC. It's the sim itself locking up for a bit when people TP in.

Tends to happen more often at sim border crossings, and when moving for long distances.

I've found that when I get an episode of heavy rubberbanding, it's safer to move in short little bursts, rather than holding that arrow key down.

Apparently it now happens when someone tp's in to the sim you are in also.

That might explain some of the rubber-banding I'd had during the day yesterday. And I was just walking a brief distance, from one end of my workshop to the other.

Come to think of it, yes... people were TPing in when it happened.

There is a JIRA about it but I forget what number it is.
