Hi

I want to know, how do I change my avatar all together? I dont want to change the appearance of my current avatar, I want to pick a new avatar all together. What do I do?

Look in your inventory, in Library -> Clothing.

As a start, you can drag folders from in there directly onto your avatar. You can also drag individual items from those folders onto yourself to mix & match.

Meade is right. You can change your avatar to other shapes, sizes, genders, species, etc. using skins, shapes, and attachments that you can purchase, find free, or find in your library folder in your inventory.

But if you mean you want a new name, then you must get another SL account.

If you scroll down to part 4 (Free Dove) and part 6 (More (Sorta) Freebie Places), you can get some good explanations of the parts of the avatar (shape, skin, eyes, hair).

You can also find freebie/newbie packs that come with complete avatars, and it's fun to try them out.

Here is an explanation I've written and posted before:

Your avatar is made up of four elements: shape, skin, hair, and clothes.

Clothes are easy to change or take off, but you must *always* have a shape and skin.

You can't take off your shape or skin. You can only change it by putting on another shape or skin.

Some of the default skins have painted-on underwear which can't be removed or altered. The only way to get rid of it is to put on a new skin. You can buy skins or find them in the freebie areas. You can also find other shapes and hair.

If you try to edit your appearance, but can't, it's probably because your skin or shape can't be modified. Someone created your skin, and some creators don't want their work altered. If you want to play around with your body's appearance, you will need to find skins and shapes that can be modified.

You also might try to modify your hair and find it looking very strange, as if something is oozing out of your head. This happens because there are two kinds of hair: the hair you can "grow" and hair you can buy or find. The second kind is more like a wig, and all the newbie avatars come with hair like that.

You can take off (or detach) the wig-like hair, and you'll probably look bald.

If you try to edit your appearance and change your hair *that* way, you'll be able to form it and shape it with the sliders in the Edit Appearance window. Most people don't do that. Most people go find hair they like and use it. Some people go bald. It's your choice.

Your eyes work in a way similar to your hair: your avatar probably came with a set of eyes that you can put on and take off.

To find other shapes, skins, or hair, click Search, and type "skins" or "shapes" or "hair" under the Places tab. There are freebies in the newbie areas (where you first came into Second Life) and in many of the newbie-friendly stores.

My understanding is that you want a new Avatar all together with a new name and all (aka an Alt or Alternate). You can read more about that here: https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417

Step 1 : Go to the Second Life home page. Click "Log Out" at the upper right.
Step 2 : Reload the web page if it did not do so automatically. Click "Join Now"
Step 3 : Go through all the steps up to finding a name you want and verfying that it is available.
Step 4 : Open a new window/tab and go to gmail.com where you can register an email account with the name of your avatar in the making. [email]2connect.Fanbridge@gmail.com[/email] for example.
Step 5 : Finish off the account creation on Second Life.

And there you have it. Your new virtual persona.
