I put on a DEMO body skin/shape.
All is back to normal accept my skin still says "Maxi Demo" all over it.
How do I get back to the default skin?

Put on your usual skin and it will replace the demo. You can only wear one skin at a time.

If you can't find it, type "skin" in the search bar in your inventory, and hopefully, you'll see it there. Otherwise, it will be a trawl through the inventory to locate the skin icon.

You can't take off body parts....eyes, skin, shape and system hair. But you can replace them.
Find the skin you were wearing before you changed it...right click on the skin and click wear. This will replace the skin you are wearing with the earlier one.

Thank you very much. I'm all fixed now.
The demo has convinced me though that I am a very ugly child until I buy a skin/shape.
Too many options and not so much money :)
Thanks again

There are plenty of good free and 1L$ designer skins around, Susan. Keep an eye on some of the SL freebie blogs, such as Free*Style, because they'll let you know when designers are offering limited-time free skins and group gifts, etc.

Save a copy of your current shape (right click, save) and play with the sliders to aim for the shape you really want as opposed to the default. There are a ton of free skins for new accounts which are good quality, but it's often the case that the shape has a profound influence on whether a particular skin works or not. I'm not sure where the free skins are, off the top of my head, but there is a valuable stickied thread above that has all sorts of fine hints and tips for the newer SL resident.

It's sometimes helpfull to keep a default skin (this can be a freebie skin, or the default) in a high level inventory location. I add special characters to the names of all my critical items in inventory (i.e !,*,0) to put them at the top of the list.

Susan, Take a look in INVENTORY > LIBRARY > CLOTHING There are many free skins there and some of its are nice. Is a good option in the begining if you have few money.

I will spend some time in the inventory but I think I'm going to look like a tiny woman and not a young girl unless I spend some money.

Messing with the sliders like Max said is the best way to get a good look that is individual, though there are freebie shapes around.
There is a new residents kit floating around the place which is full of useful items and notecards with plenty of info.
Have a look at the freebie places like Free Dove, Sara Nerd's, Yadni's junkyard etc.
All of these will have some great items, they will have some skins, and shapes too. I've heard that The Shelter and NCI are good for newbies aswell.

I may have read your post here wrongly, but if you are looking to create a child avatar then check out the Freebies and Dollarbies floor of Style Your Destiny (SYD), in Granymyr. They have both male and female child avatar packs (containing at least a shape and skin, probably eyes too - I haven't checked) and both are just 1L$ apiece. They might give you a good start.

I created a folder called markubis Brentano.

And in it , I put all of my things I normally wear: shape, skin, tattoo, pants, boots, hair, eyes, AO, etc.

Whenever I try out a new avatar or chnage my clothes or hair ...whatever...I can always right click on that Markubis folder and select "wear outfit" (its called something like that)

It instantly brings me back to my normal self.

This is bringing back a nightmare I had when I was a newbie. I had a beautiful skin & shape and was very inexperienced with trying on different ones, and I tried on a free one in my inventory & I looked like a melted Barbie doll. I was soooooooo mad because I couldn't figure out what to do, so I looked like a major freak for hours until I found someone in-world that helped me out!

Hi, yes, that is a good idea to store my own shape! I have been messing around with my shape and I saved it in a totally new folder that I called Edith.

I have a question about skins. I have been sort of looking around, and I see that there are options to buy just single skins and then multi-packs. Do people change their skins a lot here? Like some packs have "no make-up" and then skins with other make-up shades. Is that a worthwhile buy? I haven't decided if I want to spend a lot of money here yet but I want to get my money's worth, if you know what I mean.

So far I am having a lot of fun here!

Oh, and another question. I see that a lot of people have houses in Second Life. Does EVERYONE have their own land? Am I a loser if I don't have a land?

I may change my skin to match whatever outfit I'm wearing, e.g. a gold outfit will get the gold makeup. I have about 9-10 that I wear frequently, one pack plus a few extra singles, and 3 singles from a different line.

edit: and no, you are not a loser. enjoy the homeless life if that is what floats your boat. when you are ready to get land, go ahead, but just enjoy SL and learn what it is first before you get tied to land.

I am at a store right now and it says to view their skins in the best way, to set to Midday. What does that mean?

(Never mind, I just figured it out, ha ha! That's pretty cool!)

I've bought multi-packs of skins, but I don't change my makeup that much. Some people do. I don't wear makeup often in RL either.

And no, not everybody has land or wants it and no one will look down on you if you don't. Unless you tell them, no one will even know.

It's nice to have a home to log into and someplace to build and change clothes privately, but those can be accomplished in other ways. I was homeless for my first month or so, and then spent quite a while renting a skybox before I was given a plot of group land to live on by some close friends. Last month, after more than a year in SL, I finally bought land of my own.
