Hi everyone!

I am still very much a newbie :)

I am not a premium member, so I am unable to purchase land, but I want a place to call my own here :(

Is there a way I can buy or build a house somewhere?

you can rent land and put a house on it, or rent with a place that alraedy has a house, slybox, apartment, etc.

You can rent without going premium. Ask Skye Whitcroft or Sarah Nerd or Avion Raymaker or Cristalle Karami for more info inworld. They all offer rentals.

You can also search land sales if you sort by Estate listings. This is tricky for a new person, so I suggest you IM one of the above rental experts for assistance first.

Welcome to sl and the forums. As 3Ring stated, if you don't want to buy land, renting is a good option. You can't just pick a spot and put a house on land you don't own or rent.

Yes you can rent land / homes on private sims. Some of them will let you build homes. Be sure to do the research on the land lord you are renting from and pay close attention to the covenants.

There is also mainland for rent and the same rules apply. I would recommend rented a pre-built home until you figure out what you want and need.

I will say that there is plenty of land for sale now if you wanted to go that route and if you keep it under 512sq you will only pay tier of 10.00 a month. Which also gives you a weekly stipend of 300L. Not bad to play around with to start off with. Thats just my suggestion of what I would do. I orig went for the gusto right of the bat and bought 4800sq and had a blast staying on my land and practiced building and learning.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the reference, Ray.

Renting is a low-commitment way of finding out what it is you like and how much land/prims you will need if you want to buy your own plot. There are a large number of decent landlords out there, but you do need to do your research. I would advise browsing the classifieds under property rentals or land sales & rentals, both inworld and in these forums, to get a good idea of people's offerings. There are also rental directories inworld that can also help.

Take your time, there is no rush.

Am I missing something? I thought you only needed a premier membership to own land on one of the mainlands, but it was perfectly fine to buy on an island.

Even if it is sometimes referred to as 'buying on an island', you are really only renting it from the island owner. Some only charge a weekly/monthly rent, but others charge an upfront fee and they say you are 'buying'. In most of these cases, that fee gives you the right to 'sell' the land to someone else - but not always.

Truth though - if it is not Mainland or you do not own the entire island, then you are really 'renting'.

Buying on an island is not buying!!!

They do not make it clear, but if you "buy" land on an island estate, you are actually just paying fee to the sim owner instead of SL. So make sure you find a reputable estate owner.

Littleme's right about renting on private islands, but you CAN buy an entire island from LL without being a premium member. To retain use of a parcel on a private island, an SL resident will "rent" the plot from the island owner. He/she will never outright own the property. Useful if you just want to "think about it" for a while. Land/home ownership is not necessary in SL; many of us are happily homeless.

There are also some places that will provide you a "free' apartment or place to call your own and provide you with a modest amount of prims to play with. In exchange, your avatar must be there some amount of time each day. I think most just have there avatar sleeping in there bed when they do. Its really a form of creating traffic for a SIM.

Good Luck, JulieAnne

TYPO!
if all you own is a 512m, your tier is L$0 per month. ZERO!

you do get the L$300 stipend weekly too, so that's cool. :D
