Dealing with Adfarms

A neighbor friend of mine has been expanding his water lots as other people have slowly sold off their land and moved on. However, one person abandoned their 512m lot to Gov Linden and I assume it will be put into the auction cue. My understanding is that generally ad cutters go after these lots that are abandoned yet surrounded by nicely decorated land.

Even though this land is surrounded by my neighbors plots it is also within view of my own. Neither of us wants to bid against an adcutter who will no doubt jack up the auction price and cut it into 16m lots priced at $5,000L each.

My questions is this. Since LL allows adcutters to put up ugly ads-- are we as the landowners allowed to erect walls on all sides of the ads if we own the land surrounding them? I've heard the adcutters will threaten legal action and/or abuse report you if you do that.

That doesn't make sense because if LL wont force adcutters to take down their ads because they own their land and can do what they want--shouldn't we be able to erect walls that block those ads if the wall is completely on our land? I don't want to be considered a "griefer" by LL.

If the prims you use to hide their ads are on your land, don't cross over the border and don't contain flaming material, don't see a problem. You've as much right to put what you want on you land as they have.

You can put up whatever you want on your land as long as it doesn't encroach on a neighbors land, or bother them physically. They may threaten you with all kind of nonsense , but that's all it is , nonsense.

Thanks Incanus and Brenda, I guess we have a strategy then if we can somehow get ahold of that land and an adcutter gets it. I don't particularly want to put up a huge rectangular wall but its probably better than rotating, garish ads. :)

My neighbor filed a support ticket, since we heard that *sometimes* LL will sell you land directly if its completely surrounded by your own. I sure hope either my neighbor gets it or somebody who just wants to put up a house and live/play there.

There was a 16sm chunk of Gov. Linden land in the middle of some prim land I have and LL gave it to me. I thought that was awesome.
They also cleared the clutter off some other Gov Linden land and then thanked me for bringing it to their attention.

You have a right and a duty to build walls around adfarms. Why anyone would think these things would increase their sales is beyond me.

Totally agree...and have you considered the use of hideous ghastly downright offensive textures. On your side of the wall apply nice harmonious pleasing textures..whereas..on their side apply..well whatever textural nastiness you think you can get away with.

I've never understood how ad farms work (do they work..I suppose they must)..they are nothing but a scourge on SL life and frankly they should be treated 'fire with fire' (someone's bound to object to this)..see where I'm coming from.

Well, for what I understand, this little 512 sqm parcel has not even been put up for auction yet. So, what you and neighbor do is this: pre-build walls around parcel. Nobody wants to buy it.

What will this do? Discourage ad-farmer from buying it maybe, and your benefit is to bid on it knowing that if you win, or if new neighbor is ok, then wall is removed. A 512 sqm parcel for auction cannot be very much money!

I second Dytska's suggestion. Living on the mainland is a on-going battle. Be prepared for the battle.

Ohh they work

The idea is to be so annoying the neighbors are forced to buy them out.

Which just leads to more adfarms somewhere else, of course.

what an awesome idea!

fyi, cutters will pay quite a bit for a 512 on a nice adfree sim.

Good move drop it's vaue through the floor and let any adfarmers seeing it know it isn't a pushover spot to bid on, they may go for an easier target, then chip in with your neighbours bid for it and divide it or use spare tier to make it a nice little park.
Then again how do you know who is an adfarmers alt bidding on it and who's not make an agreement, you all want it, a ceiling bid and will chip in and get it.
Because if you lose it and it gets chopped into 16 parcels, all hell breaks loose.

My friends and I also purchased cheap a little 512 plot directly from Gov Linden after the original owner had abandoned it. We completely surrounded it on 3 sides, and the 4th side was a Linden road.

As for who advertises with the farmers, note that beginning businesses that don't know the situation will often by suckered into it. For example, when I first started in SL I had ads on a couple of billboard networks until a friend clued me into what they were doing.

I was butted up against some abandoned Linden land that was 512 once. I just sent a request in asking for the land to be sold to me. Took abotu a month, but one day I went in and noticed it for sale to me for 1L
