Creating Terminals for Free Clothing

Hey there,

I'm new to the whole "Second Life" thing and have been asked to use it for a University Project. Our aim is to create some sort of social event and since Christmas is looming and that's when our hand-in date/presentation will be, we were thinking of creating a Christmas Fancy Dress party.

However, what we want to do is offer people fancy dress costumes which we've collected as they walk in to the venue. Is there such a way we can create a "terminal" easily where people can collect various clothing for free or would we need to register as a shop?

Also, would it be frowned upon by the clothing creators if we were to hand out costumes which have been collected for free to random people?

Sorry this is such a long question!

Cheers,

Satanic.

Welcome to Second Life and to the Forums.

It's easy to set up freebie vendors. Many ways to do it, but perhaps the easiest would be to just drop the goods in boxes (maybe one for males and one for females, or separate ones for each outfit, or however you want to do it), texture the boxes with some sort of image showing or describing what's inside, then setting the box "For Sale" for L$0, selling Contents. Optionally (and preferably) set the When Left-Clicked action to "Buy object";).

There should be no objection to this; it's done all the time. That is, however, assuming these are legitimate freebies--that is, the original creators intended the items to be distributed free and with Copy and Transfer permissions, they weren't just copybotted or otherwise made through infringing the creators' IP rights. (Some freebies you may obtain are the product of illicit copying; you'd want to be sure anything you distribute has good IP provenance.)

also, you want to make sure that the clothing has transfer permissions, lots of creators make free things sort of as samples, and distribute them 'no transfer' which means the person who got them can't pass them on.

If the permissions are correct, you can rez a prim, put something into it, set it for sale at $0.

If the clothing is full perm and has not been copybotted, then more than likely it was intended to be passed around to help newbies.

I think I have gowns and a tux, if you need those. I even have shoes for men and women. All full perm freebies. If you would like those, or any help or advice, let me know.

Others can help you with the more technical side of the vendors. What I can do is give you a landmark if needed, to an NCI hub. Those have a freebie wall in which you can find more than one style of vendor. Just set it up to 'buy for 0' which means, free. Most will come with instructions, I think.

You do not need to 'register' your shop. There is no business bureau or central registry. Just buy or rent some land and set up shop.

(PS Shouldn't you have named yourself Santa?)

Apologies for not being able to get back until now to thank you all for the responses, things have been busy planning the other parts of the event as well as our development blog - the posts make for some very interesting and helpful reading!

If I were to create a "vendor box", would I simply have to create a 3D box using the in-world creator and then just alter some properties? Where would I find the information to do this? :).

Also, Melita, would you might PMing me with some landmarks of the locations you mentioned? These would be very much appreciated!

Thank you all once again for your helpful advice.

P.S. Also Melita, it may have made more sense to call myself Santa haha..maybe that will become my nickname for this project since I have all of the letters in my first name anyway :D

Sure. I had just logged out but am logging in long enuf to do this. :) I'll send you the NCI hub links, and I might even have some vendors I picked up, just to make it easier for you than trying to find them at the hubs yourself. How to use them...well...I hope they have instructions. Lol. If not, others here will know how to tell you.

Or drop by the Forum Cartel hangout. It's in search. I don't have a current LM for it.

So it won't be that many landmarks at this point. I mostly use the freebie blogs myself and I tell others to do the same. I have some old, full perm freebies I used to give people, too.

You wanted LM so LM it is...

PS Call it Santa, Inc. That uses almost all your letters... :P
