Hey, you...yes, you! The one who's thinking about doing a survey for a research project on virtual worlds. I have a REAL research proposal for you. If you pull it off, you'll get an A, and money for your department, and maybe a job offer from Linden Lab.

Model the Second Life economy on a computer. Validate it by running it against historical data.

Linden Lab keeps coming up with policies that have unexpected results...like the recent changes to Open Space regions and pricing. They badly need a tool that will let them try out changes to their products, pricing, and policies BEFORE they inflict them on their customers.

Do you have the chops to tackle this? If you do, be sure to start early, and have your advisor apply for a grant from Linden Lab to finance the project.

It's a win-win-win-win. You get a top grade, and if your work is good enough, maybe a job after graduation. Your school gets some cash. Linden Lab gets a tool that'll help them design the best strategies for Second Life. And we Residents can stop being assaulted by capricious policy changes...AND there will be one less friggin' survey request.

Good luck.

It IS a good idea.

As someone with a BA in Economics (my PhD is in an entirely different field), I would doubt that the art of modeling is advanced enough for the purpose you describe (that is, to be detailed enough to be predictive of SL economic events and statistics).

Still, it's definitely a worthy endeavor.

On a more practical note, I'd offer the suggestion: how about a study of studies of SL? The number of surveys in the Forums, alone, would provide truckloads of data. Which ones get serious answers? Of the non-serious answers, which are funniest?

Sure, it's a bit meta, but then that's all the rage in Academia nowadays.

Lindal - That requires WORK. It is far easier to just come here and ask a few questions.

Definitely not 'more practical', but definitely easier
