It always happens, after the planned/unplanned outages that are supposed to fix things, you have more bugs than before... then after two or three days it's fixed...to the normal SL's bug level :).

I got logged out and now can't get back in, because the Inventory System is currently unavailable.

Support tell me its because some database servers are being re-started and should be Ok in a few minutes.

Maybe its related to your problem.

From the blog:

"Rolling Restart Beginning at 11:00 AM PST on 12/12/07
Wednesday, December 12th, 2007 at 9:53 AM PST by: Maurice Linden

Last night we experienced an intermittent inventory database failure. The database recovered but needs maintenance. This requires us to log out a small number of Residents using that database for a short period of time (30 minutes).

As noted in the blog earlier, we tracked down and fixed an inventory bug that was plaguing some Residents. We’ve decided to do a rolling restart this evening to get this fix out to the grid ASAP as the fix was a relatively minor change, but with a potentially large impact. The rolling restart will commence at approximately 11:00 AM PST on 12/12/07, and should take about 2 hours. We’ll update this post as soon as the restart completes. Thank you for your patience. "

I don't understand all this "maintenance" stuff.

I mean, it's software. It doesn't have moving parts, or need lubrication, or wear out.

Can somebody tell me (ME, not my Resident Geek) what it is that the grid monkeys do every other Wednesday when they do "maintenance"?

Hmmm, it could be a number of things.. But here are some of the basics of server maintenance..
I will try to keep it as non-technical as I can..

Software uses memory, and over time this memory gets fragmented, that is broken up into smaller and smaller useful pieces, so a shutdown and restart fixes that.

Databases use indexes, basically a sorted list so things are easier to find.. Like keeping a grocery list in alphabetical order for example.. Well those indexes can become corrupted or just need to be resorted to get rid of deleted bits..

The hard disks that are used to store all this data also get fragmented.. So they need to be de-fragged from time to time..

There is also physical checks that are done to make sure things are working right and nothing is about to fail..

And there is adding new hardware to the system, that sometimes must be down with the system powered off..

Since everything is linked together, it is often better or even required that you bring the whole thing down. Fix what has to be fixed then bring it all back up again.

There is a lot of other reasons too, but I cannot think of a good way to explain them without getting all technical on you.. *smiles* But I hope this at least helps explain a little of why there are maintance days.

And yes I work with computers.. *laughs*
