Hi Hunter, welcome!

I would be more than happy to help you with your avatar stuff, but I am currently without my home PC so I can't go in world. What I will say is......you can get skin that has permanant tattoos....so you don't have to wear them as layers......other folks probably know of some skin makers who do this....but they ARE out there. I just don't know who the creators are.

As for hair.......there's so many hair makers in SL......it pays to keep shopping....also, you can edit hair and re-size it.....almost all hair sold in SL has modify permissions so you can make any kind of changes you want. It helps to practice a bit with basic building and editing before tackling hair tho...it can be really tedius, so make copies of any hair you buy that you want to edit~!

I'll check on ya when I do get back in world....if you still need help...let me know. ;)

Welcome to SL.

Everyone (except bald people) struggles with hair at first. I would recommend finding some freebie shops and trying as many different hair styles as you can find. If you have money, you can go looking for better hair to buy. Most of the hair shops have demos of their various hair styles that you can buy for one Linden in order to try it to see if it fits before you pay the full price.

Many of the shops sell modifiable hair that you can adjust to fit your head. You will need some basic building skills for that.

Making hair can be difficult. You need to have a little more experience at building in order to do it. Even then, making good looking hair is an art. I consider myself to be an experienced builder, but all my attempts at making good looking have failed miserably.

If you want permanent tattoos, they have to go on your skin, which requires that someone create a new skin (in Photoshop or some other graphics program) and draw them on. There are tutorials on making skins if you look hard enough.

Most people make or buy tattoos and put them on their underwear layer. It isn't permanent, but it is a whole lot easier to make just a tattoo than a good looking skin with a tattoo on it.

Also, many really good hair designers sell demo models for L$0 so you can see how a hair looks on your avatar without any risk.

One thing people keep asking for from LL is a tattoo layer, so we can have our cake and eat it too. But I think this will happen around the same time as neck attachment points ;)

Check out NCI. They have free classes in avatar make over, clothes (and tattoo's) making, and hair making.

Here is a link - it has a class schedule: http://www.roscrow.uklinux.net/NCI/index.html

In world you can search for New Citizens, or NCI to find the locations

Search - Events - Education --type NCI will bring up a list of the classes scheduled in the coming days

I remember in another, somewhat wilder SL forum a member started a thread entitled something like "A message to men's hair designers: XXXXX you! I'll make my own."

A bit later in the thread he said something like "Never mind. I tried. It's hard!"
I always thought that was a witty and memorable post and I never tried to make hair. Don't let that scare you off from trying though.

For guys in particular the choices are abyssmal. It took me over a year to find a style I'm happy with. Just keep trying different things and if you av is a male, don't rule out the idea of ladies' hair either. A few ladies' styles look fine on men.

Another option is to buy skin that has hair already painted on. I have a skin that came with both bald and hair versions. This looks far more realistic for very short hair, like you've just gotten out of the military and it works great with hats.

There are usually a couple of hair designers that offer one free hair style for new avatars, for the first 30 days after rez date. (I'm hoping somebody will remember which designers do this currently. Failing that, I'd suggest checking around Diversity and Gurl6 to see if they're still doing this.)

As already mentioned, making hair from scratch (as for resale) is not a beginning exercise. But after a little practice with the Editor, and with the help of a posing stand, it's not hopelessly scary to edit a copy of some purchased hair.

If you're intent on creating tattoos baked permanently into the skin, an excellent starting resource is Eloh Eliot's fantastically generous contribution of good quality skin images in multiply-layered PSDs; check out her blog at http://eloheliot.blogspot.com for free downloads. (Hint: search there for "skin PSDs" or the like.)

Note that adding tattoos as layers of the skin image might be a somewhat advanced bit of graphics editing, so if this all seems daunting, that shouldn't cause distress. At least 90% of tattooed avatars are wearing the tattoos on changeable purchased underwear layers.

There are lots of Japanese designers who do great guy hair!

I'm pretty sure ETD and Bewitched both offer freebies to new folks....also I know Gurl6 does for ladies hair...and they do have a mens shop so I'm guessing they have some free styles for new male avatars too.
Calico hair used to have some super discounted styles at the front of their store as well. ;)
