Hey, Y'all!

What exactly does "capped" IMs mean? I see this all the time in profiles, with the request that messages be placed into a notecard.

If you get too many messages while you're logged out (and it doesn't take all that many), SL unceremoniously dumps the overflow and tells you "Yup, we capped your IMs HAW HAW!" the next time you log in.

I think the maximum is 25, before you just don't get any more.

100? Wow. My alt's usually get capped a lot lower than that. I've counted them and it's about 25 or so.

ETA: That must have changed pretty recently. Looking at the date that KB article was last modified:

They've claimed 100 for a long time but it does poop out well before that, even taking into account other IM-ish things like inventory and group notices.

In my experience the cap is nowhere near 100, even including inventory offers and group notices. 25 sounds closer to correct. It might even be as low as 20.

I think Madhu is correct. There is no way it's 100. I log in pretty much daily, and certainly don't get 100 messages in one day and I get my messages capped regularly. I should only be that popular :p

Maybe they mean 100 lines, which could easily be about 20 IMs.

I'm not having it that it's 100 either, unless there's some weird forumla being applied or away goals count double, there's no way it's 100.

Who knows what they mean, but there's only ever one line in one IM

(one) definition of the word capped...

When something is capped, it will not exceed or go past that amount or limit.

Mine too. I counted once and it was about 20 or 25 (I forget).

What *really* annoys me is the:

SomeRandomAv Idon'tKnow: hi
SomeRandomAv Idon'tKnow: r u on
SomeRandomAv Idon'tKnow: hello?
SomeRandomAv Idon'tKnow has offered to become your friend in Second Life. Log in to accept or decline the offer.
[10 mins later]
SomeRandomAv Idon'tKnow: Valentino?

25% of my offlines gone in one hit... :(

That can't be right. I cap out every other day and I know I don't get 100 offlines every day. More like 30-40.

It's pretty common knoledge that most knoledge base articles are out of date.

The date they show as modified is not a good way of telling either, Most of the base information stays the same across edits.

Okay, so now i know what capped means. But now what I don't understand is why the same people who mention capped IMs in their profiles recommend sending a notecard instead. I'd think that from what y'all are saying is that the number of notecards would be capped too.

That does indeed happen, inventory offers can be lost too.

What some shopkeepers do that does make sense, is to leave a drop box out. Notecards dropped into an object are kept in that object, they don't have to go through the IM system. (Those have problems of their own, because they don't tell you who sent the message, but there are workarounds that are kind of OK.)

A lot of the time it just means "I'm a delusional, self-important tosspot"

The notecard will go into inventory, but the opportunity to reject it upon login may be lost when IMs get capped. You won't get the blue dropdown menu for it, but it will still sit in your inventory.

It will be preserved if an avatar directly drops the inventory. Any approach that involves scripted transfers will result in inventory loss (that's SVC-2364).
